The Happy Halfling

Guide to Halfling Enhancements

By Darkgolem Halflings are a fun, enjoyable race.  The epitome of stealthy and trickery, they can make excellent rogues, bards, and with the proper enhancement and feat selection, warriors.  Planning the build of your halfling is important, and part of that is making sure you have the right enhancements.

The Basics

A quick summary for those unfamiliar with the way enhancements work for DDO is in order.  First, you get 4 action points every level.  They are earned gradually as you work your way to your next level. You use these action points to purchase enhancements.  You much qualify for an enhancement to purchase it.  Enhancements require a certain amount of action points to already have been spent, less powerful similar enhancements and sometimes for you to have a feat, before you can purchase them.  Because of the requirements for various enhancements, you should plan on how you wish to spend your action points when you begin character creation.

Halfling Enhancements

Choosing Your Role

It's very tricky to make a halfling character properly.  The lower strength of the race, plus the importance of specializing correctly to maximize your advantages and minimize your disadvantages can make all the difference.  You should carefully consider your feats and enhancements, based upon what role you chose for your character.  It can be very discouraging to build a character with a role envisioned, but not have picked the right enhancements or feats to fit that role.  Pick the exact role you wish your character to have, then see if you can fit the feats and enhancements that work with that role properly.

Halfling Skirmisher

As a warrior or rogue, or combination thereof, the halfling skirmisher fights on the edges of the battlefield, distracting and killing opponents while nimbly dodging away from their attacks.
  •  Halfling Athletics – a high jump skills is very useful on the battlefield (as any high level arcane caster) in avoiding attacks.  With a high enough skill, a skirmisher can literally jump clear over opponents, keeping out of reach.
  • Halfling Thrown Weapon Damage – with the halfling gift with thrown weapons, the extra damage gains from this enhancement adds up over time to be quite a bit.
  • Halfling Thrown Weapon Attack – hitting is always good with a weapon of choice.
  • Halfling Cunning – using tumble and jump, a halfling skirmisher maneuvers to the weak spots of opponents, gaining bonuses to attack
  • Halfling Dexterity key for hitting with thrown weapons.

Halfling Companion

With the natural inclination halflings have to avoid unwanted attention, and their keen senses, the halfling companion is able to make sure his or her friends are never caught aware, and can be there to bring soul stones (or if they have umd) raise friends after the dust settles.  However, wit their powerful hero's companion enhancement, they can turn their friends into fighting machines.
  • Halfling Keen Ears – allows a halfling to locate hidden and invisible foes, and note dangers before they are seen.
  • Halfling Silent Moves – allows the halfling companion to be less visible, and more likely to be in a position to assist friends.
  • Halfling Hiding – key in being able to scout for his or her friends, and keep out of the way in combats.
  • Halfling Hero's Companion – a key ability that can grant a very large bonus to allies for a short time.

The Ultimate Rogue

Much like the Halfling Skirmisher, but with a greater concentration upon stealth and less upon melee, the Ultimate Rogue is a master of his or her craft, unseen, unheard, and able to strike with deadly effect upon key foes in a battle.
  • Halfling Keen Ears – Detecting threats before they are aware of the rogue is important.
  • Halfling Dexterity – key for a halfling to dodge attacks.
  • Halfling Silent Moves – Avoiding attention until attacking is very important.
  • Halfling Hiding – Remaining undetected is also key for a ultimate rogue.
  • Halfling Cunning – striking from behind with a bonus to hit is a very nice benefit for the ultimate rogue.
  • Halfling Fear Resistance – fear is a weak spot for a rogue, this helps deal with this problem.
