Quests 1 -

These quests are really the reason for "The Friar's Niece" quests, for
these quests lead from Archbishop Dryden's discovery that a corruption
of the tenet's of the Silver Flame, called the Duality, is somehow
involved in his mad daughters control of the undead.  However, the
Duality series of quests are more challenging than the previous quest
chain, moving up from the simple zombies and skeleton's found
previously, to wights, ghasts and ghouls, and the dangerous arcane
skeletons.

The Old Archives quest involves the heroes entering the old archives of
the library, discovering it has been over run by undead, and fighting
through the undead to find three parts of a tome about the
Duality.  This tome is considered heretical and evil, and are
stored in hidden portions of the library.  Of interest is
that the adventurers discover, upon speaking to the Archbishop, that
this tome was written by the evil and mad uncle of the archbishop,
Gerard Dryden, who worshiped and preached the tenets of the Duality.

One final note, make sure to bring at least 2 or three throw away
clubs.. there are an annoyingly large amount of href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=36">oozes
in this quest, who
will proceed to wreck one's equipment unless you are prepared.

The old archives are found two floors below the
marketplace entrance to the href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/modules.php?set_albumName=The-Old-Archives&id=Archives_Map&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php"> alt="Map of Old Archives"

style="border: 2px solid ; width: 250px; height: 289px;" align="right">
catacombs.  Immediately upon entering,
you will see the librarian Guilliaume, who will (foolishly) agree to
show you where the first piece of tome you need to find.  He also
explains that they break up the tomes into pieces when they are so
evil, and so the tome is split  three section, which are in three
secret rooms.

Follow Guilliaume to the secret room, where upon he dies from the
attentions of a ghoul.  You will now see a mixed group of oozes,
ghouls, ghasts and a zombie or two attack, which you should proceed to
slaughter.  Remember that skeletons have damage reduction against
slashing and piercing weapons, while zombies have resistance against
blunt and piercing weapons.

After defeating these opponents, you should up a set of stairs to the
south, which lead you to a long east - west hallway.  A shrine is
found on your left if you should need it.  There are many oozes
here, along with scattered undead.

At this point, you will see the lower libraries.  size="-1"> size="-1">There is no need
at all to enter these
style="font-family: tahoma;"> style="font-family: tahoma;">areas, they have no treasure, unless you size="-1"> href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/modules.php?full=1&set_albumName=The-Old-Archives&id=Lower_library&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php"> alt="Looking down upon the lower libraries"

style="border: 2px solid ; width: 250px; height: 203px;" align="left">
size="-1">wish to
complete the optional objective of clearing out the library
infestation.  The best method to do this is to buff one party
member, who goes into these pit lit areas.  This triggers the
attacks of the creatures found here, either spiders or undead.
Then the party member who did this climbs back up the ladder to the
upper levels, and the adventuring party will use range attacks to kill
the opponents.  Sometimes you must venture down to complete the
job, but the use of ranged attacks makes this method safer.

Bypassing the lower library area found in this section of the quest,
you will note a secret door on your left.  Behind this secret door
is an arcane skeleton and 2 skeletal skirmishers.  The skirmishers
are just slightly tougher skeleton archers.  The arcane skeleton
is not particularly tough, but casts spells like ray of enfeeblement,
and more importantly, is surrounded by a field of negative energy which
will damage all those present.  Kill the arcane skeleton quickly,
it is the most dangerous opponent found in the archives.  Beyond
these foes is a chest, trapped with a acid bottle trap (that is,
bottles of acid erupt from openings in the walls, thrown around the
chest, when the chest is opened).

After dealing with arcane skeleton, continue west to the end of the
east - west hallway.  Here you meet several spiders.  At the
end of the book stacks here is another secret door, which leads to a
second book, part of Gerard Dryden's evil tome about the Duality.
Several spiders href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/modules.php?full=1&set_albumName=The-Old-Archives&id=Spiders&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php"> alt="Spiders attack!"

style="border: 2px solid ; width: 250px; height: 204px;" align="right">
erupt from the ground here when the tome is taken, so
be prepared.

Once the tome is acquired, head east and take your first northern
turn.  This north - south hallway leads to another library area,
past a lower library section (this has undead instead of spiders), and
at the far north portion is another secret door with the third and
final piece of the tome you need.  Undead will be in this area,
including some skeletal knights (who have moderately good armor
on).  The tome piece is trapped with a blade trap.  A high
reflex save, if no href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=144">rogue
is available, will help avoid the damage from
taking the piece.

Having taken this third piece you be finished with this quest.  At
this point, you can either venture into the lower library (finishing
with the optional objective of clearing out the infestation) or simply
leave.  Head to the Archbishop Dryden's chamber in the top floor
of the catacombs to continue this quest series.

Quest
2:  Seek Dryden's Counsel

This quest is
really just  administrative.  Speak to the
Archbishop.  He will read the book, note a (mainly destroyed)
rubbing from the tomb of mad, evil Gerard Dryden, and decide that the
rubbing must be a clue on how to proceed finding his daughter
Marguerite and defeating the evil she has unleashed.  He demands
you go to his family tomb (conveniently located on the floor below the
archives in the catacombs), and get a copy of the rubbing from his evil
uncle's tomb.
