Aion's use of the anti-hack software called GameGuard has been a silent partner for most players. When working as intended, the program works hand in hand with the game to stop hackers and cheaters by monitoring processes during gameplay.

While this noble pursuit leaves most players thankful and hopeful for a cheat free game, it does have undesired consequences for a particular set of gamers that are finding the game unplayable with GameGuard.

AbleGamers.com, a community of disabled gamers, brings up a valid point noting that some gamers require the use of legal third party programs based on their disabilities. Because of how GameGuard works, these players are being shut out of Aion altogether and unjustly. Steve Spohn explains why this is happening.

In addition to gaming peripheral, assistive technology is almost entirely disabled rendering most disabled gamers unable to play. Assistive technologies such as voice recognition programs, on-screen keyboards and switch-based devices such as the ones seen at one-switch. Gaming mice and keyboards with additional buttons, macros, and gesture controls are also disabled.

Without the ability to use assistive technology, many disabled gamers have to abandon these games entirely. For those with no disabilities, losing the ability to use your favorite gaming mouse can be overcome if the desire to play the game is strong enough but for those with motor impairing disabilities - it is impossible to play without these special devices.

Steve goes on to discuss why GameGuard doesn't work and how it effects disabled gamers in hopes of drawing attention to this problem. You can catch the full article by visiting the AbleGamers.com website.

This goes beyond the pain in the rear issue of peripherals being mucked with and mild performance issues that some have had to deal with. This effectively shuts out an entire section of the gaming community from Aion. Should NCsoft be taking steps to rectify this and how do they do it?
