Popular World of Warcraft Mounts and How to Get Them!



A player goes rushing by and in that brief second you find you have become sure of one thing;, you must have that mount. Whether you’re an avid collector or just an average Joe struck by fancy to , you are willing to go to great lengths to obtain the mount of your dreams. If only you knew where it came from! This guide will attempt to help you collect the mount you so desire but be advised that some mounts will take more dedication than others, and to obtain some will prove to be nothing short of frustrating.

Quest Reward Mounts


Venomhide Ravasaur

  • Requirements: Level 40 and Apprentice Riding.
  • Movement: Increases ground speed by 60%/100%.
  • Races: Orc, Undead, Tauren, Troll, Blood Elf, Goblin
To gain this mount travel to the Un’Goro Crater and seek out Mor’vek at the edge of the Crater, just south east of Fire Plume Ridge. Mor’vek will offer you several easy quests to complete. Once you have proven yourself to Mor’vek by completing his quests he will offer you a Venomhide Ravasaur hatchling for you to raise. For the hatchling to fully mature, you will need to collect 20 of it’s baby teeth. The baby teeth are obtained by doing the daily quest offered to you by the hatchling (rather easy collection quests). Once you have collected all 20 teeth, bring them, 20 Runecloth, 80 Gold and 20 Rugged Leather back to Mor’vek for the saddle to your new mount. Keep in mind the teeth are given as a reward for a daily quest, so it will take you 20 days (at least) to get your mount.



White Polar Bear

  • Requirements: Level 40 and Journeyman Riding.
  • Movement: Increases ground speed by 60%/100%.
  • Races: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Draenei, Worgen, Orc, Undead, Tauren, Troll, Blood Elf, Goblin
While doing the quest chains in Storm Peaks you will find yourself turned at one point into one of the Hyldnir (think big beefy blue women). Completing the quests associated with the Hyldnir are not only essential to progression in the zone but will also open up a few daily quests. When these daily quests are completed players will receive Hyldnir Spoils. Inside this bag players will find gold, various junk items (snowballs, food, ect), and perhaps if they are very lucky the Reins of the White Polar Bear. Don’t expect this to drop on your first try though, as this white beauty has around a 1% drop rate. Complete the daily quests here every day to up your chances of getting this awesome mount.How exactly the bear fits inside this bag remains a mystery.

Winterspring Frostsaber

Source: Can be purchased from Rivern Frostwind who can be found on top of Frostsaber Rock in Winterspring. This mount can be purchased for 10 Gold once you reach Exalted with the Wintersaber Trainers. The easiest way to do this is to complete the daily quests available for this faction. Starting out there will only be one, however halfway through Neutral another quest will open  up for you to do. Once you hit Friendly you will have three quests available to help you work towards Exalted. The daily quests for this faction are:

Green Proto-Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Looted from the Cracked Egg which starts out as a Mysterious Egg and can be obtained from the Oracles in Sholazar Basin. You must be Revered reputation or higher to purchase the egg. The Oracles offer several daily quests in the surrounding village to help you gain the needed reputation. Once you are able to buy the egg you will be forced to wait seven days for it to hatch. Once hatched you will find either, an Aged Yolk, one of the various mini-pets, or if you are exceptionally lucky this mount. You may only have one Mysterious Egg in your inventory at one time. The Green Proto-Drake has roughly a 2% drop rate.

Cenarion War Hippogryph
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Purchased from Fedryen Swiftspea in Cenarion Refuge, Zangarmarsh. This mount will cost 1600 Gold, and is only available at Exalted reputation.  To achieve Exalted status, run Slave Pens, or Underbog if you  can and turn in all the Unidentified Plant Parts you possibly can. These drop off of most the mobs in Zangermarsh. Once you’ve reached Honored you can no longer turn in the Plant parts, so make the most of it while you can.  Once you reach Honored, if you haven’t done them already, now would be the best time to knock out all the quests available from the Cenarion Expedition. Also during this time you should turn in any Uncatalogued Species you have previously found.

Riding Talbuks/War Talbuks
Requirements: Level 40, Riding Skill 150/Level 60, Riding Skill 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Riding and War Talbuks can be purchased from either Trader Narasu in Telaar (Alliance), or from Provisioner Nasela in Garadar. Both NPCs can be found in Nagrand. This mount requires you to be Exalted with either the Kurenai or Mag’har depending on if you are Alliance or Horde. There are only so many quests that will give you this reputation so be prepared to kill a lot of Ogres. Ogres can be found in various places throughout Nagrand and will randomly drop War Beads. Once you collect 10, turn in the Beards for reputation, repeat until you reach Exalted. Riding Talbuks cost 56G, while War Talbuks can be purchased for slightly more at 80G. Mounts can be purchased in Cobalt, Silver, White, and Tan.

Nether Drakes
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Nether Drakes can be purchased from Drake Dealer Hurlunk in Netherwing Ledge, Shadowmoon Valley. To purchase these Drakes you will need to gain Exalted reputation with the Netherwing faction. To gain Exalted you will need to complete the daily quests that can be found on Netherwing Ledge in Shadowmoon Valley. Once Exalted is reached you can complete a quest (given by Onyxien in Lower City, Shattrath)  that will allow you to gain one of these mounts for free. Any additional Drakes can be purchased from Drake Dealer Hurlunk for 160G. The Drakes come in many colors including: Onyx, Azure, Viridian, Purple, Violet, and Cobalt.

Nether Rays
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Nether Rays can be purchased from Grella in Blackwind Landing, Terokkar Forest only after you have reached Exalted with the Sha’tari Skyguard. To gain Exalted simply complete the dailies available to you on Blackwind Landing, and if you really are determined you can also kill most of the mobs there for reputation. Once you’ve reached Exalted these mounts can be purchased for 160G and come in a variety of colors including: Purple, Green, Blue, Red, and Silver.



Achievement Mounts


Black War Bear
Requirements: Level 40, Riding Skill 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: This mount is the reward for completing the achievement “For the Alliance!”, or “For the Horde!” both of which require you to kill the leaders of the opposing factions.

Albino Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: To obtain this mount you must complete the achievement “Leading the Cavalry” which requires you to collect 50 mounts. This may prove to be a tedious and expensive endeavor.

Red Proto-Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Probably not for the casual player, this mount is a reward for completing the achievement “Glory of the Hero”, which involves competing 38 different heroic difficulty dungeon achievements. See your in game achievement menu for the exact achievements required.

Violet Proto-Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill Level 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 310%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Granted after completing the achievement “What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been”, which involves completing most of  the achievements contained in: To Honor Ones Elders, Fool For Love, Noble Gardener, For the Children, The Flame Keeper(H)/The Flame Warden (A), Brewmaster, Hallowed Be Thy Name, and Merrymaker. Check your in game achievement menu for more information.

Blue (A)/Red (H) Dragonhawk
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei - Blue Dragonhawk
Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves - Red Dragonhawk
Source: These mounts are the rewards for the achievement “Mountain o’ Mounts”. This achievement requires the player to collect 100 unique mounts.

Ironbound Proto-Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 310%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: An awesome looking mount, however once again, probably not obtainable by the casual player. Given for completing the achievement “Heroic: Glory of the Ulduar Raider”. If you are determined to have this mount ask around your server, many guilds who have this content on farm will allow you to buy a spot into their raid to obtain this mount.

Rusted Proto-Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground = 100%, Air - 310%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Easier to obtain than it’s Ironbound sibling, this mount is the reward for completing the “Glory of the Ulduar Raider” achievement. To complete this achievement you will need to complete various achievements inside of Ulduar. See your in game achievement menu for more information. Once again, if you cannot clear Ulduar, check with some of the guilds on your server and you may be able to buy yourself a spot into a raid to get this mount.

Crusader’s Black Warhorse (H)/Crusader’s White Warhorse (A)
Requirements: N/A
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Black - Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves/White - Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei
Source: Granted to those brave and skilled adventures who complete the achievement “A Tribute to Immortality”. This achievement requires players to reach the Tribute Chest in Trial of the Grand Crusader with 50 attempts remaining and without allowing any raid member to die during any of the boss encounters.

Loot Mounts


Fiery Warhorse
Requirements: Level 60, Riding Skill 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Defeat Attumen the Huntsman in Karazhan to have a chance at this mount. This mount has around a 1% drop rate.




Deathcharger
Requirements: Level 40, Riding Skill 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Dropped by Baron Rivendare in Stratholme. While this old school instance may seem like an easy farm, keep in mind this mount has only a 1% drop rate and is considered one of the rarest mounts out there. Patience will be needed when going after this mount.



Swift Zulian Tiger
Requirements: Level 40, Riding Skill 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: High Priest Thekal in Zul’Gurub has a chance to drop this mount after he is defeated. This mount has around a 1% drop rate, however Zul’Gurub has a 3 day reset making this much easier to farm.

Swift Razzashi Raptor
Requirements: Level 40, Riding Skill 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Dropped in Zul’Gurub like the Zulian Tiger, this mount has a 1% chance to drop off of Bloodlord Mandokir. Once again, since Zul’Gurub as a 3 day reset this mount is easier than others to farm.



Raven Lord
Requirements: Level 60, Riding Skill 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Drops in Heroic Sethekk Halls, off Anzu, a boss that can only be summoned by a Druid, making this more difficult than most mounts to obtain. This mount has roughly a .08% drop rate.

Swift White Hawkstrider
Requirements: Level 40, Riding Skill 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Since everyone needs a white chicken in their life, this mount can be obtained by defeating Kael’thas Sunstrider in Magister’s Terrace (Heroic). To gain entrance into Heroic Magister’s Terrace The drop rate for this mount is roughly around 2%.


Phoenix (Ashes of Al’ar)
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air -310%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: While this mount’s name may lead you to believe it drops from Al’ar, it really drops from Kael’thas Sunstrider in The Eye, Tempest Keep. This mount has a 1-2% drop rate. The first ever phoenix mount was actually given to Ezra  Chatterton, a young man who went to visit Blizzard’s offices with the Make-A-Wish foundation.

Ahn’Qiraji Battle Tanks
Requirements: Level 40, Riding Skill 75
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: These mounts are trash drops from any of the enemies that can be found inside the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj. They are easy to obtain by simply walking outside and resetting the instance and proceeding to kill the trash again. Sadly enough these mounts can only be used inside the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj and any aggressive action towards the player riding the mount forces the mount to burrow back into the ground from which it came. Available colors are: Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow. Red is by far the rarest, and as such the most sought after.

Black Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Available to those talented 10 man groups who manage to defeat Sartharion with all three of his drake lieutenants alive. One of these drakes will drop every single time you manage to do this. Cross your fingers for some awesome rolls.

Twilight Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Drops from Sartharion 25 man after he has been defeated with all three of his drake lieutenants up. Not an easy achievement to gain, having this mount will certainly give you at least a little prestige. This mount is a guaranteed drop each time Sartharion is defeated in this manner.

Blue Drake/Azure Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Dropped by that now evil dragon Malygos on either 10 (Blue), or 25 (Azure) man this mount has less than a 1% drop rate.



Bronze Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: A guaranteed drop from the Infinite Corrupter within Heroic Caverns of Time: Stratholme. Don’t become complacent though, located just before Mal’Ganis, the Infinite Corrupter is only killable if your party reaches him, and kills him within 25 minutes. If you fail this mob will despawn and you will have to try again another day. Please note that only one of these mounts drop each time you kill the Infinite Corrupter.

Onyxian Drake
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 310%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: True to it’s name the Onyxian Drake now drops off Onyxia who can be found in her lair deep in Dustwallow Marsh. This mount has roughly a 1% drop rate and can drop in either 10 or 25 player mode.

Blue Proto-Drake
Requirements: Level 80, Riding Skill 300
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 280%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Drops in heroic Utgarde Pinnacle from Skadi the Ruthless. As with most other rare drop mounts, the Blue Proto-Drake has about a 1% chance to drop.

Sea Turtle
Requirements: Level 20, Riding Skill 75
Movement: Ground - 0%, Water - 60%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Can be caught while fishing in Northrend fishing pools, this mount only increases your speed (60%) while you are in water. On land you will find that it really does move like a turtle.

Mimiron’s Head
Requirements: Level 70, Riding Skill 225
Movement: Ground - 100%, Air - 310%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Reminiscent of Dr. Robutnik’s vehicle of choice in the Sonic games, this head drops from Yogg-Saron 25 man, if you have no Keepers assisting you. This is a very fast…head.




World Event Mounts


Great Brewfest Kodo/Brewfest Ram
Requirements: Level 40, Riding 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Only available during Brewfest, these mounts have a chance to drop off Coren Direbrew in Blackrock Depths. While the mounts are rather rare, both mounts can occasionally drop at the same time, from the same kill.

Magic Broom
Requirements: Level 10, Riding 75
Movement: Scales with Riding Skill
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: These Brooms are rather common drop from the Headless Horseman, a summon able boss that can be found in Scarlet Monastery during the Hallows End holiday. These brooms automatically become a flying mount when used in Outland or Northrend. These mounts sadly only have a 14 day duration and will then vanish from your bags.

Headless Horseman’s Steed
Requirements: Level 40, Riding 75
Movement: Scales with Riding Skill
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: Dropped by the Headless Horseman in Scarlet Monastery during the Hallow’s End holiday event these mounts scale themselves to the riding skill of the rider. These mounts will fly when the rider is in Outland or Northrend. A very rare mount indeed with less than a 2% drop rate.


Other


Mekgineer's Chopper (A)/Mechano-Hog (H)
Requirements: Level 80, Riding 150
Movement: Ground Only - 100%
Ridden by: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei, Orcs, Undead, Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves
Source: This nifty little motor bike can be crafted for you by an Engineer. However you will find that it will cost you quite a bit of gold in the process. The materials are none too cheap, and will take some time to collect. I don’t think we will be seeing these selling consistently on the AH anytime soon.

Argent Tournament Mounts
The Argent Tournament provides many mounts for every kind of taste. Simply gain the correct faction for the mount you want, and collect enough Champions Seals to purchase the mount of your choice.
