Star Trek Online Ground Combat, Beam down, it’s time to rock ‘n roll.

Posted Tue, Feb 02, 2010 by Medeor

Star Trek Online offers up some variety in the ways to vaporize people, so today we look at the bi-pedal version, or Ground Combat. Cryptic has plenty of terra firma experience from Champions Online and brings the “other worldly” flair to the ground based missions. There aren’t a lot of land missions in the opening ranks but enough that players can see the diversity in mission and away team style. Grab your trusty rifle and let’s take it to ‘em.

Ground combat is somewhat of a hybrid between MMOG-standard fighting and a first person shooter. First and foremost though, this game is more strategic, not twitchy. Choosing targets and attacks is strategic, jumping around like your butt is on fire while spinning in the air and shooting in every direction is twitchy. It’s an important distinction because sometimes the battles get pretty hairy. When things get nutty, simmer down and logically progress through the choices and hand them their heads.

Read the rest of the Ground Combat Guide and while you're at it, you'll want to read Dalmarus' Ground UI Guide as well so you know what all those cool icons mean.
