Legendary Pictures Acquires Mass Effect Movie Rights

Posted Tue, May 25, 2010 by Martuk

There are many people that feel that the Mass Effect series would transition into a movie well. The story, characters, and lore are certainly there and if done correctly, this IP could make for one heck of an epic sci-fi saga on the big screen. Well, the talk of what kind of movie it could be is over and what kind it "will" be has begun. Legendary Pictures, makers of such films as The Dark Knight and 300, have acquired the movie rights to the epic BioWare Mass Effect saga.

Many games have had a rough time transitioning from game to movie. The Resident Evil series only marginally resembled the actual game and may be the best example of a successful game to movie adaptation. Others are less fortunate such as Uwe Boll's House of the Dead, Blood Reign, Super Mario Bros., and Doom. All we can do now is cross our fingers and hope Legendary Pictures gives this epic saga the movie it deserves and not some low-budget, rushed hack job filled with hammed up over-actors.

Mark Protosevich, writer of I am Legend and Thor is in talks to write the script. The director and cast have yet to be announced, but additional news and producer details can be found at Gamasutra.
