A Review of Rappelz - Page Three

Posted July 5th, 2007 by Cody Bye

Rappelz certainly fits the grinding bill. Although I didn’t have time to reach the upper levels of the game, I could see the appeal that certain items (rare pets, high-end dungeons, and the eventual release of a high-end profession) could bring to people. However, there isn’t much meaningful content in-between those two points, and you’ll spend those simply generating more experience for your character.

Pretty, Fluid, and Responsive

Even with all these problems, Rappelz still remains a very visually appealing game. Although not as stylized or perfected as Sword of the New World or Lineage II, Rappelz certainly holds its own in the general free-to-play online game marketplace. The graphics are crisp and can be operated on a lower-end machine. Judging from the screenshots I’ve taken and gathered from the gpotato.com homepage, it’s easy to see why a person could fall in love with the visual style of Rappelz.

Leonidas eat your heart out
Leonidas has nothing on the ripped bod of Micajah.

Along with that, the control system is responsive and intuitive for anyone that’s played an imported game. Movement is mainly controlled with point-and-click maneuvers, and the hotkeys are actually mapped to the “F” keys, like F1, F2, F10, etc. This isn’t a particular problem, as most gamers are already used to reaching for other hotkeys besides the simple numbers anyway.

The music in Rappelz is also of a fairly high quality, but it can get repetitive at times as the music is largely based around what area you are in rather than what kind of action you’re partaking in. It’s quite melodic for the first couple passes through, and you may want to listen if the mood strikes you.

Is Rappelz Worth the Download?

While I cannot argue with the value of a free-to-play game, Rappelz isn’t the highest caliber title that you could be playing through at a given moment. Its problems certainly caused me to use up more of my time than what I had previously anticipated, so if you’re looking for a quick diversion, you should look elsewhere. At its core, Rappelz is a typical Korean-made MMOG, and although you level incredibly fast, there will still be a lot of monster killing to be done.

However, if you’re in the mood for a free-to-play MMOG that has well-made graphics and doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg to obtain, Rappelz could be for you. The high fantasy setting may also be a draw for some people, so don’t look past the game entirely. Just be warned that there are numerous flaws in Rappelz, and if gpotato wants to improve their game they should take a look at what’s necessary to truly localize an imported title.

  • It’s free-to-play!
  • Well-drawn graphics
  • Intuitive controls
  • Horrible new player experience
  • Poor translation in dialogue
  • Repetitive dialogue trees

Ten Ton Recommendation:

Rappelz isn’t a game that should demand all your attention, but it could be worth playing if the gamer enjoys an anime art style or grinding.
