Runes
of Magic as I am sure you can imagine is all about runes and how you
can use them. Sure you will get gear, weapons, trinkets, and other
items but runes are really what make the world go around. You can and
will certainly strive for these things to increase your ability as a
player but if you ignore runes in your quest for glory not only will
you never reach your full potential but it will become near
impossible to be effective on any level for end game content.

History

Runes
are said to have
been created by the god of Ayvenas when the land of Taborea was
created. Everything beyond the mundane that is accessible to the
inhabitants of the land is made possible through the use of runes.
Every rune has a unique power that when combined with other runes to
form words, paragraphs and even entire tomes will create the ability
to produce a power that is unknown in today's Taborea. The ancient
kingdom had great understanding but after the crumbling of the walls
the realms were facing destruction; and as the walls crumbled so did
the understanding of the runes and the power the held.

In
today's Taborea the
human and elven inhabitants have very little understanding outside of
shouting certain rune combinations to influence the elements for
basic creation and destruction.

Need to Know

Runes
and Stones are the
same thing and can be used interchangeably.

Now
when playing Runes of
Magic you will not really hear your character shouting out random
phrases nor will you have to take up studying a foreign language so
you can create spells, but you will be using the runes in various
other capacities to make your gear and weapons better and better.

Your
runes will drop off
of random mobs and your collection will begin as early as you killing
your first mob. You may not get any for a while or they may seem to
drop right out of the sky. The important thing is you will use so
many runes throughout your adventures that until you get to end game
selling even one should not cross your mind.

There
are several types of
runes for both crafting and for other activities throughout the land
of Taborea. Let’s take a look at these runes and what each one of
them does.

The
first set of runes
there really is not a table for. They are what I refer to as “basic
runes” these are the runes that are directly tied to strength,
wisdom, health, mana, and many other basic stats that you enhance not
only through your gear but also through adding these runes to your
gear. There are however two other types of runes that are only used
for special things. Not to say that the basic runes are not special
it’s just they are used about as frequently as drinking a health
potion.

[protip]As
you are
leveling your character it will be a good idea to take note either
mentally or on a piece of paper as to what mobs drop what runes, due
to the fact that you are going to need lots and lots of them. This
is going to be mostly true of the “special” runes because of the
nature in how they are used.[/protip]

The above runes are used
for your crafting. It’s really straight forward and when you start
using them it is very uniform. This could put a hamper on how much
crafting you do as you level up because even though the runes drop
randomly they do not seem to drop all the time.

These
are the names of
some of the special runes that are not crafting runes. You will use
these only for the task indicated.

Now
there are many other
types of runes that were indicated briefly before. These were what I
referred to as the “basic runes”. The only thing is there is
nothing really basic about them. There are more of them and they are
everywhere.

The
first thing you are
going to need to make sure that you do is that you have opened up
your Arcane Transmutor (AT). You will do this through a quest that
you receive at level 10 or above from a trainer in the class hall in
Varanas. After you have completed this simple quest you will be able
to access your Arcane Transmutor through the treasure chest icon in
your backpack. In order to be able to use the AT you need to have
charges on it. Charges can be purchased off the Auction house or by
using Phirius tokens gained from your daily quests. Also, it’s a
good idea to make sure you have enough charges before you start to
make a piece of gear; there is no worse feeling then getting to the
end and not having enough to finish.

Everything
in Runes of
Magic is based on tier. The first rule of thumb is that everything
has to match in tier. Only runes/stones of the same tier should go
into the AT at the same time.

Tier
bumping (TB) is one
of the most common tasks you will complete when using the AT. The
math for this is very simple. Five stones of similar stat and tier
go into the AT and one of the tier above comes out. Example: 5 tier
I strength runes/stones = 1 tier II strength rune/stone. You really
cannot go wrong with doing this as you go along. Even though not
every mob drops these runes you will have lots and lots of them so do
not be afraid to consolidate your runes/stones as you go.

You
can also create new
runes/stones, including some that are not even found naturally but
only by combining two or more different runes of the same tier to
create all new runes. These are just the basics of creating runes
themselves which can be sold on the auction house for lots of cash. I
have thought about this and if you are not into crafting in the
traditional sense you could go into rune crafting and make quite a
lot of gold I would think.

Enhancing
Stats through
Gear

When
using runes or stones
to enhance your gear there are two main stones you need. They are
Power Stones and Mana Stones.

Power
Stones can be
purchased from NPC's in most cities or from the item shop. If you
get them from the item shop using diamonds they will possess a single
attribute but, if you use your Phirius Tokens which you get from
doing your daily quests, then you will get a random additional
attribute as well.

Mana
Stones are created by
dropping a piece of gear with a Power Stone into the AT and hitting
the confirm button. You have one distinct advantage here that you
can see what the attribute of the resulting stone will be before you
click the confirm button. So unless it’s something you have found
somewhere else or have done before don't be afraid to try out a few
things.

You
can also increase the
power of the Mana Stones by dragging 3 Mana Stones of the same tier
into the AT and hitting the confirm button again. Be careful here
because if you start mixing up the attributes on the Mana stones only
a certain amount will transfer and the weakest ones will transfer
first so putting together Mana Stones with similar level will help
increase you chance in getting a better mix.

Once
you have Mana Stones
with the desired stats you were looking for you drag three of them
and the piece of equipment you want to enhance into the AT and review
the end product if its good, hit confirm, and if not try and mix a
few things up to get what you are looking for.

Summary

Using
this information you can mix and match endless possibilities to make
your
equipment anything you want it to be. You can get everything you
want to get from the auction house or by creating it yourself. There
is a certain satisfaction in creating it yourself as well as getting
a final product that is exactly what you need and want.

The
only down side I have
found with this whole process is the trial and error that it comes
with. For somebody who is a theory crafter or a real min/max player
then this is certainly for you but if you just want the best recipes
to get the best results then you will have a fair amount of research
as the game is just coming up on its first year and there are not a
lot of stock recipes out there. Really just get out there and
experiment with all of the different options and don't be afraid to
try something.
