Cryptic Studios acquired the Star Trek Online property and license from now defunct developer Perpetual Entertainment in 2008 before the game was complete. In order to keep the license, Cryptic had to abide by the original deadline that Perpetual had agreed to with CBS according Executive Producer Stephen D’Angelo in a new STOked podcast interview. Under heavy pressure, the team at Cryptic managed to launch the game successfully and later this month Star Trek Online will join the ranks of the free-to-play.
