Fans of X-Wing and TIE Fighter rejoice. Disney today announced a new partnership with developer Area 52 Games to develop Star Wars: Attack Squadrons, a new free-to-play space fighter game set in the Star Wars universe. While the initial impression may remind some players of classic starfighter games such as Rogue Squadron, X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, and a number of other classics, going down the checklist of features will also seem pretty familiar to players of BioWares Galactic Starfighter expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR), which began early access for subscribers earlier this month. But unlike Galactic Starfighter, Star Wars: Attack Squadrons makes use of ships from the original trilogy era. Some of the old star fighter favorites like the X-Wing and TIE Fighter crafts can be used by players.
Star Wars: Attack Squadrons offers 3 PvP modes with a free-for-all 16 player death match, team dogfights, and base defense. Players can customize their fighters and modify them to suit their playstyles. If all that tickled your inner Star Wars nerd you can head over and sign up for the closed beta, which is set to kick sometime next year.
