The SWG licensing contract between SOE and LucasArts is scheduled to run out in 2012 and it appears that neither party will be attempting to renew it with the impending release of BioWare’s upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic and SOE’s other title, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures. Smedley also explained that the cancellation is a business decision and not related to a shrinking playerbase or the hacker attacks earlier this year.
As for now, the sun is setting in SWG, but SOE will announce a few event and content plans as the year goes on. Check out the full interview with John Smedley over at Massively.
Always had a special place in my heart SWG! That being said even in the interview the NGE was brought up. Ultimately this is the reason for its demise. Is it a solid game now? Sure it is.
No one can deny that this game will go down in MMO history as a huge success and failure at the same time and its mistakes have fueled successes elsewhere.
I can only hope that they release the software for open source or such projects so others can keep it going because we all know SWG Emu is pretty much useless.
They will NOT release the code. SOE would NEVER do anything to make any potential or past customer happy. That's the very reason they gave us the NGE. 90% of the players said no way, that's totally fkn stupid, so they did it as soon as they could. The bottom line is this....
SOE has the worst reputation in the history of MMO's when it comes to making paying customers happy. If you want your money to be better spent when it comes to online gaming, stay away from SOE.....far, far away.
Is it a solid game now? Sure it is.
