The Secret World Eliminates Subscription Fee
It seems that there was something to the mad ramblings of Joel Bylos earlier this week. Funcom has announced that the subscription fee for The Secret World (TSW) is no longer required. The new slogan states Âpay once, play forever and hereÂs how it works. Once you purchase a retail or digital copy of the game, you can play it all for free. Subscriptions are still available but they now come with some different perks that include the following:
- 'The Time Accelerator'. This clickable item increases experience gain for defeating monsters by 100% for 1 hour and has a 16 hour cool-down. This item can only be used by Members and Grand Masters.
- $10 worth of Bonus Points given out every month which can be used towards any product in the Item Store of The Secret World (bonus points are valid for 6 months).
- Membership Item-of-the-month gift (given out every month).
- 10% discount to everything in the Item Store except Content Packs or other Packs (discounts to the Item Store do not stack with other offers).
Additionally, there is also a Grand Master Lifetime membership available, which gives all of those items plus 20% off of store content, minus content packs and other packs. Anyone that purchased an Initiate's Pack this month before the announcement will also be reimbursed 1800 bonus points.
You can learn more about the new model, costs and benefits via the official TSW FAQ. Check out the new trailer and press release after the break for more.
FUNCOM REMOVES SUBSCRIPTION REQUIREMENT FROM ÂTHE SECRET WORLDÂ
 Pay Once, Play Forever! Â
ÂNo Complicated Rules or Restrictions, Simply Enjoy All the Content and Features of ÂThe Secret World Without Ever Having to Commit to a Subscription Â
Durham, USA  December 12th, 2012  Funcom is excited to announce that subscription is no longer required to play the companyÂs modern-day massively multiplayer online game ÂThe Secret WorldÂ. The game is now available online and in retail and starting today no subscription fee is required to enjoy any of the gameÂs content, features or storylines. There are no complicated rules or restrictions, no complex matrixes telling you what you can and cannot access. Pay Once, Play Forever  itÂs that simple.
ÂWith this recent change there is no reason not to join and take part in ÂThe Secret WorldÂ, says Game Director Joel Bylos. ÂMost players end up having a ton of fun once they delve into the myths and legends of ÂThe Secret WorldÂ, and we believe the game has the potential to be even more successful without the subscription entry barrier. It is an ambitious and very exciting move for us!Â
Besides working tirelessly to expand ÂThe Secret World through new content and features, Joel Bylos is also currently preparing for the end of the world, expected to come on December 21st 2012. Recently, Bylos released the first in a series of videos chronicling his final days on earth. Meanwhile, in the realm of the sane, Funcom is also currently running a special end-of-the-world alternate reality game.
ÂThe Secret World is one of the most unique massively multiplayer games ever released, breaking the mold on everything from its modern-day setting to its freeform progression system that is neither built on classes or levels. The game received several glowing reviews after launch earlier this year, with magazines such as PC Powerplay saying ÂThe Secret World is a breath of fresh air in a stale genre and TenTonHammerreporting that ÂFuncom has colored outside the tried and true lines of the MMO genreÂ. As of now, ÂThe Secret World has a user rating of 8.2 on MetaCritic and 8.50 on MMORPG.com.
Since launch, the talented and dedicated live team working on ÂThe Secret World has pushed out four major content updates, adding everything from new weapons to an entire raid to the game. This post-launch update plan is among some of the most ambitious in the MMO industry, and the team will continue to create free updates  also called Issues  as well as offering optional paid content packs.
Even though the subscription requirement for ÂThe Secret World has been removed, there is still a Membership option available which provide exciting bonuses such as 10 USD/EUR per month which can be spent in the in-game store, the ÂTime Accelerator item that grants double experience gain for one hour each day, a fixed 10% discount to everything in the in-game store, and more.
