Ten Ton Hammer Video of the Day

Middle-earth's dark story gets a little darker.

Middle-earth gets a little darker in Monolith Production’s upcoming action RPG, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. First revealed last November, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is based on J.R.R Tolkien’s epic The Lord of the Ring series, crafting its own unique story within the universe. The game is set between The Hobbit and the first of The Lord of the Rings stories. Players take on the role of Talion, a ranger with wraith-like abilities.

This week Monolith revealed their first extensive pre-alpha gameplay video that showcases some of the unique and familiar gameplay mechanics within Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. While you may recognize some features such as the dialogue wheel and how a player’s choice can influence the story (ala Mass Effect), the RPG also incorporates a memory system, building a history between the player and characters that they encounter. If a player defeats an enemy, they can use their powers to decide their fate in a number of ways. You can sacrifice them, have them spy, take control of them and their followers, or have them try to assassinate another enemy. Each decision offers its own quest and can play out a number of different ways, taking the storyline down different paths as characters remember their encounters. See how it all works in today’s video.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is in development for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC and currently has no release date. You can visit the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor website to learn more.
