CCP CMO David Reid recently sat down for a chat with Develop to discuss CCPs recent accolade of winning the top Independent Studio at the Develop Awards and his work at CCP. But Reid also offered his take on publisher-owned developers, who he feels are restricted in their ability to take creative liberty with games and take a risk on new ideas.
Develop: Do you think publisher owned companies cant take creative risks like an independent studio can?
David Reid: I think thats true. Its a business at the end of the day, and I dont think its crazy to look at whats happened to some of the marquee developers in our industry, as theyve become part of larger companies.
It just is what it is that when youre part of a bigger team and a bigger company, and have public shareholders and things like that, you have a lot more things to answer for.
Reid goes on to state that that sort of environment can be hard to take risks in given their risky nature. And not having that overall corporate strategy is one of the reasons that he feels that CCP has been so successful. Reid also touches on why he believes the subscription model is still viable and discuss CCP's working relationship with Sony to connect the PlayStation 3-based DUST 514 to the PC-based EVE Online universe.
