Virtues are gained through Deeds which vary from area to area. The are two types of Deeds: Exploration and Monster Slaying.

Exploration Deeds are a combination of quest completions in certain areas, discovering certain points on the maps, or interacting with a set of objects in various places (inevitably dangerous areas). You'll also notice some of these are in stages like Advanced and Final. You will have to complete the preceeding Deed in order to try the others.

Monster Slaying is exactly what it sounds like. These are normally discovered by killing a creature for the first time. You will receive the Deed asking you to wipe out a certain number of them and these can also be found in stages.
