Forbes magazine believes it is all about mainstream now

Continuing the theme of business in games today, there's some commentary today from a Forbes magazine saying that the crowd of Hardcore gamers, while still vocal, may be less relevant than it used to be. Even some people in the wider industry are starting to agree. Warren Spector of Deus Ex fame:

"At the risk of alienating all of the people who paid my mortgage all these years, they can't be," answers legendary game designer Warren Spector. "We are in a commercial art form, which means you have to focus on the mainstream if you are playing in that game space," added the Deus Ex director.

Most hardcore gamers, it's speculated, are gravitating towards smaller companies and their products. That's probably a good thing, since those smaller companies and products could use the boost from a fanatical fan base - something the hardcore gaming crowd has the potential to be.
