Halcyon, And On, And On... - Is repeatable endgame instancing the only way?

The repeatable instanced endgame, simultaneously loved and hated by nearly everyone that makes that precipitous climb to level cap. Our topic this week: is there a better way to handle endgame content? Since most of Ethec's characters are the in-game equivalent of kindergarten dropouts, he first discusses the need for a level cap before wending his way to the topic at hand:

"Barring some radical approach like the one just discussed above, the level cap is the best compromise between the hardcore and casual players' very different needs. For game-driven lifers, attaining level cap is the first of many major goals; a place to stop and see how your loot, leadership, and gameplay match up with other level-capped players. For life-driven gamers, an attainable level cap might be the difference between giving up after two weeks or inching your way to cap over months and years. As long as MMORPG gaming is fundamentally about achievement, I don't see any other answer."
