Quests 3 -
4: The Crypt of Gerard Dryden and Seeking Dryden's Council (2)
style="color: rgb(51, 0, 51);">By

This is really the first of the Duality series of quests which is
difficult for the level it is designed for. You meet many, many
skeletal undead, along with some spiders, zombies, and ghouls. You have
been sent here by Archbishop Dryden to get a rubbing from the tomb of
his dead, evil uncle, Gerard Dryden, in hopes of finding clues of where
the archbishops (evidently) corrupted
href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=421">daughter
is, and what she is
doing.
To proceed in this quest, you must first travel along the rectangular
hallway opening 4 gates which block your way. Once you have
reached the area of this hallway, you gain the key to the inner crypts
of these tombs, which you then enter, pulling levers which open the
gate to the central crypt of this tomb. There is found the tomb
of Gerard Dryden. After defeating the ghast which Gerard Dryden
has become, you get the rubbing from the tomb and are finished.
Regarding this quest, make sure to have a blunt weapon for the
skeletons you meet here. You meet quite a few, and they do not
have damage reduction against blunt weapons. There are many
skeletal archers here. It is unwise to leave them behind; there
are undead in the sarcophagi that line these hallways, and if the
archers
should fire an arrow at these sarcophagi, they will break and you will
have to face the undead that escape. Finally, there is a separate
room containing the Dryden family treasure. Why the Archbishop
doesn't mind you looting his families treasures is unclear, but to your
benefit, often you can find the mace of Gerard Dryden in a chest in
this room, and it is a +1 Mace of Undead Bane, which is good treasure
for this level adventure.

style="font-weight: bold;">Quest 3: The Crypt of Gerard Dryden
Having spoken to the Archbishop Dryden after "The
Old Archives" quest, you now return to the lower portions of the
catacombs. The Dryden family tombs

located one floor below
the old archives.
Here you find yourself in a rectangular hallway. Of note are
ambushes. Through ought this quest, these hallways have ambushes
which will trigger as you move along. Some are iron defenders or
spiders, most are undead. Also, ambushes are found in each
"lever" room and the Gerard family treasure room. Of these
ambushes, you can choose to leave the

skeletal archers alone, since
they will not follow, but see the introduction above on why this might
be a bad idea. There is one shrine in this quest, so you should
return to it to rest when you still have enough resources to survive
one more ambush; some ambushes are found in areas you have already
passed, so you are not guaranteed safe passage back to the shrine if
you have cleared to it already.
As you move along the main hallway, you will meet gates (named after
precious stones). Each gate is next to a door leading to a tomb,
simply enter the tomb (facing an ambush) and pull the lever on the far
side.

Once you have moved all
the way down the hallway, you will find a
chest, with a key to the inner tombs. Now move back down the
hallway the way you came, entering the inner tombs and pulling levers
found in these areas. The levers in the inner tombs open the way
to the central area of the family crypt.
One inner tombs has a barred gate (rather than a solid door) blocking
it. This door, unlike the other inner tombs, is pickable.
Open this to complete the optional objective of finding the Dryden
family treasure. Remember you can find Gerard Dryden's mace here.
After all the inner tombs have had their lever's pulled, you will have
opened the central area of the family crypt. Be prepared, this
area is a relatively tough fight. Inside you will meet several
skeletal archers and knights, along with the ghast of Gerard
Dryden. Defeat them, then click on the upright sarcophagus found
on the dais

in the center of the room. At that point you will
have completed this quest. Simply loot the chest and exit.
Quest
2: Seek Dryden's Counsel
Another
administrative quest. The writings found on Gerard
Dryden's tomb confirm more that the Duality is involved. There is
an implication that worshipers of the Duality gain power by eating the
bones of the dead. The archbishop explains that Gerard Dryden was
caught grinding up and eating the bones of the dead in the lower crypts
when his
href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=218">
evil was discovered.
Because the archbishop fears his
daughter is in fact committing this same crime, and furthermore, that
she may animate the remains of the elders of the Silver Flame religion
(who will rise, evidently, as liches), he sends you to the crypt of the
church patriarchs to prevent this from happening, and finding
Marguerite. He further explains that to do this, if indeed she is
there, the heroes must fight through the undead there, then consecrate
the tombs of the patriarchs, to gain access to the central tombs there,
where Marguerite is likely to be.
