Torchlight II Too Big for XBLA, MMO Still in the Works

Torchlight II is on track for a 2011 release, but the Torchlight MMO could still be quite a ways off.

Torchlight became a sleeper hit when it released in 2009 and the game only continued to impress developer Runic Games with a strong showing on Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA). But the planned sequel to Torchlight is too big for the XBLA memory limit, which the original Torchlight just managed to squeak by according to Runic Games CEO Max Schaefer.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Schaefer explained that Torchlight II will be much larger than its predecessor and if it ever were to make an appearance on XBLA it would likely be "comprehensively redesigned." Given the size of Torchlight II, Schaefer did state that the developer would consider a commercial release of the game to the console, but for now the team is focused on completing the project for the PC and then creating a Mac port.

Schaefer also added that the Torchlight MMO is still in the works but declined to commit to a schedule, noting that if Torchlight II ends up being a huge hit, more time may be devoted to that before pushing more into the MMO project.

Runic Games hopes to have the game out sometime this fall, but a winter release is possible.
