It appears WoW has wowed some competing companies.... so much so they say they can't compete with it! Wow!
THQ President and CEO Brian Farrell has stated that World of Warcraft is by far the dominant product it the MMORPG market at the moment, and that his company is not planning on directly challenging it while it remains strong!
"We're looking at it very closely, but I want to find the right opportunity," said Farrell. "I think what you will not see THQ do is come out with another fantasy-type game. The other thing we're thinking is these things tend to have a window. Right now that product is World of Warcraft, so the idea would be to time something for when that product is going to be on its downward slope. To come out with something competitive now I think would be misguided for anyone, including THQ."
One can only hope that not all other major game companies take this view, as the only way to keep improving the genre is to learn what WoW has done well and not so well, and apply those lessons to competing products so as to advance the whole industry! Only by competing with it will WoW be knocked off the #1 spot!
