10 new MMOG articles today. For those of you keeping score that's 157 pieces of MMOG entertainment that you can't find anywhere else, built just for you this month. No other network comes close.
To those of you with the damnable manual spam blockers... I can't click on dozens of "prove to me you are human" links every day. If you sign up for the newsletter, please put mmognews@tentonhammer.com in your "white list". To all of you wiseacres that are going to sign-up today with manual spam filters just to annoy me. Good on you! I like your style.
Fury launched yesterday! Another MMOG (kind of) is on the market. I'll finish downloading it today, buy my keys from Auran and give it the old college try. Jeff Woleslagle has already posted his first impressions. Unlike my writing, Jeff's is bridled by facts and a large vocabulary. If you are looking to actually learn something about the game then by all means check out his article.
I leave you today with a topic that comes up more often than it should... "Why are MMOGs so hard to make?"
Breaking new ground it is more difficult than building from previous knowledge.Devs are making it up as they go. Veterans like Garriott, Hickman and Hartsman still rely on teams of newcomers to the genre to build the product.
Veteran: Dev: Team, I need a cake. I need a really, really big cake, with blue icing and a rainbow on top, oh and it needs to be able to talk to other cakes.
Team member: I made cupcakes once.
Veteran Dev: Did the cupcakes talk to one another?
Team member: No, but they had red icing and one overflowed the tin. It sort of looked like a unicorn.
Veteran Dev: You've got the most experience with cake of anyone on the team. Get it done!
Veteran Dev begins search for a person who can port unicorns into rainbows.
Scott Hartsman sums it up well, as he should being one of the few veterans in the business.
