GDC day #2 brought with it a return trip to Perpetual headquarters, a sit in with Magnus of EVE-Online and a chat with the man behind Dreamlords.
I thought that perhaps I was the only one at GDC that wasn't completely thrilled to be here. I'm not an introvert per se, but neither am I a social animal, chomping at the bit for human interaction. I'm happy to attend my appointments, shake the hands that need to be shook, smile the smiles that need to be smiled and get to writing the words that need to be wrote. This isn't to say that it isn't a pleasure to meet people like Steig Hedlund, Magnus Bergsson and the many other developers who are so incredibly passionate about their games and the game industry in general. It's an honour to meet these people. I just don't need to meet everyone in the room and do the fake kiss on cheek thing. That's not who I am. I prefer a tight circle of quality contacts to a gigantic web of mediocrity.
During my incredibly quick cruise through the blogs that I frequent I was surprised to see that Brian Green felt somewhat the same as me.
"Damion says he gets "recharged" from the conference; this is a classic sign of an extrovert. However, many of the rest of us developers are introverts. We know we should go and keep in touch with other people, but that doesn't mean we like it. Some of us are painfully introverted, and some of us probably even have Asperger Syndrome (it's almost a job requirement for some positions). So, a week of hanging around other people and trying to maintain our social manners is actually draining for us, not invigorating."
Luckily for me I don't have any social manners to maintain. It's a curse become a blessing. Read the entire bit by Brian. He is always an articulate and educated island in the sea of gamine drudgery.
I also came across this little tidbit on Wonderland,
"Three Rings (puzzlepirates) income = $100K per month from subs. $250K from microtransactions."
There are more interesting facts I wouldn't have imagined were true, but apparently they are. Pop over to Wonderland to see these freakish numbers in their natural habitat.
I have so many good things to write about the EVE Online video that we posted, but I'm completely out of time and already late to get going to GDC for the daily shaking of hands and smiling of smiles. Suffice to say, if you haven't already, check out the world exclusive look at what is coming to EVE Online.
