You voted and I listened, or rather read. EverQuest 2 was to be my "reintroduction" game this month, but I can't connect to the patch servers. I know what the problem is, and I can fix it if I buy a new router, but should I need to buy a router to play a game?
Here's the deal...I'm on a high-speed wireless Internet connection at home. This connection uses a Motorola piece of gear to send and receive the data. This piece of gear, up on my roof has a built in firewall. I can't access said firewall to port forward. The SOE patcher does some funky things that the Motorola firewall doesn't like. No other games (and I've literally played hundreds) have this problem. I can patch and play any other title to my heart's content.
The solution is to purchase a router that allows me to set my network inside the demilitarized zone (DMZ) on this lovely Motorola piece of gear. My current router works perfectly. In fact I love it. It never drops connections to either my wired or wireless networks and it just plain works. It is made by D-Link. Regrettably, it doesn't have the ability to be given a specific WAN address and this is what I need to do to stick it in the DMZ of the Motorola wireless kit. My old Linksys routers, which tended to have connection problems allowed this. Do I go back to spotty connectivity so that I can download a patch and play SOE games? For you, my readers I would do it, but it hurts.
It took hours and hours of messing around to figure out that the problem was on my roof and not in the router I have on my desk. How many gamers would have just given up and called it quits, packed their virtual bags and shuffled back to World of Warcraft? I want to spend money on a new router about as much as I want to punch a skunk.
Should I really be forced to buy a new router just to play SOE games? You tell me.
