I can't wait to see John Madden as an NPC in Warhammer Online. Please oh please, let him be a Skaven. He'd be a great rat.
It was announced yesterday that Electronic Arts (EA) intends to purchase Mythic Entertainment, the developers of Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online. EA is best known for the sports titles that mill like lemmings off the development treadmill each year, unfailingly selling copy after copy. Their sports games are excellent, top of the heap in most cases which would bode well for the Mythic properties.
Some of you, who were once and perhaps still are real-time strategy fans will remember some little games called Dune and Command and Conquer. These titles were created by Westwood Studios, a Grade-A development studio that created some of the best real time strategy games you are ever likely to play. Command and Conquer: Red Alert, even though it is long in the tooth is still brought up in RTS conversations. Westwood Studios was purchased by EA and unless my memory fails me, which it does quite often, they haven't released a top-notch game since being taken over. Command and Conquer: Generals anyone?
Despite what the folks at THQ say,
"...going up against World of Warcraft would be "misguided" for any publisher."
I believe that there are games with a chance of eating up a good portion of the World of Warcraft community. Warhammer Online, StarGate Worlds and Star Trek Online all have a shot. EA seems to believe that too.
While reading the news I noticed that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il wants to test a missile that he has named, Taepodong. A disarming and innocuous name for a nuclear missle. Can't you just see the soldiers at NORAD command when the call comes down?
Early Warning System : We have an incoming Taepodong!
Soldier: What type of dong is it? (The command center breaks up in fits of laughter)
Early Warning System: This is not a drill!
Soldier: Of course it's not a drill, that would be painful. It's a dong! (more fits of laughter) Let us know when you see a Longwang coming.
We need a MMOG based on the real world. Who wouldn't want to charm Kim Jong Il and make him pull down his pants? Comedy gold folks. Comedy gold.
Is the EA purchase of Mythic Entertainment a good thing? Discuss!
