One of the major goals we have had here at Ten Ton Hammer with this
column was to dispel some of the misconceptions that existed about
free-to-play and microtransaction gaming. We have explored new and
interesting titles, chronicled the success of DDO as it transitioned to
its new payment model and talked shop with some of the best and
brightest in the industry. But it seems in the midst of all of this we
have spawned some unintentional myths of our own, a private message
from a loyal reader tipped us off to the fact that they we have hyping
up so many new games that the impression has become that the older
games are simply not worth playing. Join Medawky this week as he takes
a look at some of the pioneers of quality free-to-play gaming in
Microcosms - The Future is Now.

With that in mind I need to dispel a couple of
misconceptions that I may have unwittingly perpetuated here:
Older free-to-play MMOGs are low quality
rip-offs. - This is simply not true, while I may have been
later to the party than our previous “guru of the free,” Ralsu --indeed
I didn’t start playing them until about halfway through my six-year
affair with EQ1--I still found several games early on that were
amazingly innovative and fun
All new free-to-play MMOGs are innovative
and high quality. - While I desperately wish this axiom were
true, it simply isn’t. Many developers and publishers will continue to
rush out low quality games to capitalize on the hot trends and try to
make a quick buck. Fortunately, we here at Ten Ton Hammer are committed
to honestly evaluating these games to help you make the best decision
on which ones may be the best fit for you.
