Our good man Jeff Woleslagle was recently at an EA Mythic soiree where he was fortunate enough to chat with Walt Yarbrough, the producer of Dark Age of Camelot. [Full Article Here]
In a true stroke of briliiance the Mythic team has chosen to roll out episodic content every two week for four months. Some other games attempted to do this on a smaller scale as Asheron's Call and Horizons player will be sure to tell you, but I believe this is the first time that truly episodic content has been rolled out so frequently for so long.
Mark Jacobs, VP EA and Studio GM of EA Mythic will be part of the "MMOs, Past, Present and Future" panel at GDC this year. Mark, Raph Koster, Daniel James (CEO of Three Rings) and other industry dignitaries will be speaking for an hour. I can't imagine that anyone in attendance will need much of a refresher on the past or the present, but I for one will be very interested to hear what they believe the future holds for MMOs. Jeff, Nicole and I will be there with all the technology we can carry (digital and video cameras, mics, tazers, etc.) to bring the full experience back to you at your oh so comfortable desk.
If there are particular developers that you would like us to interrogate please let me know.
I'm not sure why more people don't know about this, but hey... I don't mind being late and first. Ron Gilbert (Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Producer of Total Annihilation) has fired up a World of Warcraft guild and is looking for recruits. Here's what Ron has to say:
"I'm starting a Horde aligned Guild on the Server Quel'dorei called Threepwood and any WoW players looking for a Money (sic) Island Themed Guild are more then welcome to join me. My one criteria is that you have to be playing a character named after someone in Monkey Island.
If you're looking for a large high pressure Guild that does regular raids run by a draconian Guild Master that keeps careful track of everyones kill stats and admonishes members for not pulling their weight, then this probably isn't the Guild for you."
There you go folks, play WoW with a legend. Ron has the full details posted in his blog.
I applaud Ron's ability to play and interact with the game fans on a regular basis. I find it nearly impossible to play under my Boomjack moniker in most games as I spend the majority of my time answering questioning tells asking if "I'm the real Boomjack" rather than playing the game. I'm a nobody. I can't imagine the tell traffic that flows towards Ron. He probably doesn't get the death threats like I get, so maybe that is what tips the scale in his favour. ;)
