Here are some FAQ's I've seen for Assassins and my attempt to provide you with answers.
Why choose an Assassin?
Like to be up in the mix but not be the focus of a monsters wrath? With high damage stealth attacks the assassin moves in and brings the pain. Not designed to take much in the damage department, it requires cunning and strategy for maximum efficency.
One of their primary functions involves the ability to hide from most enemies, unleashing their strikes without warning. Another involves being able to tip their blades with poision, causing damage and other adverse effects. They are also one of the few classes trained to use thrown and projectile weaponry firing from a distance.
Not built for the longhaul, while assassins bring the noise, they can't sustain long term combat. However, in the first few seconds of combat there isn't much that can outdamage them.
Can Assassins solo?
Most classes can solo (as long as you can agree on the definition of solo). Assassins can outdamage most classes in the short term which means the damage comes quickly but high hit point mobs or creatures that can heal themselves might give them trouble. Much of the ability to solo wil be determined by timing, target selection, and player skill.
What's the best race for Assassin?
As you increase in level the base stats for race become more and more irrelevant as equipment can easily offset any disadvantage you have. A favorite I have seen among many Asssassins is the Ratonga because of its incredible agility. My advice however would be to pick the race you think looks the best.
What should I look for in terms of equipment?
One of the most important stats on an item to a scout is agility. Directly affecting your ability to dodge, (i.e. not get smashed) it should be one of the first things you consider. Some others to consider, are strength to increase your damage and stamina to give you more hit points. One that has been neglected up until LU#13 was intelligence. This affects your proc damage from weapons.
What do I need to know as an Assassin?
Timing and position. You will need to spend a lot of your time behind your target, which means unlike most other group members, you do care where you are standing. There are increased risks for additional encounters which will require communication with the tank (using gentle reminders or a lot of screaming).
Timing is a critical aspect of controlling your damage output. A properly taunting tank can keep a creatures attention, but without restraint, the amount of damage an Assassin can do is ungoldy and will draw the beasts ire. Learn to master stuns for maximum effectiveness and control when your enemy can cast.
Last, don't neglect your poisions. A good poison can add damage and make or break an encounter and increase your damage output/utility in a group. See your local alchemist and ask them to hook you up.
