Both Coercers and Illusionists are known as the great crowd control classes of the game. I always thought it very unfortunate that more people did not choose to play these classes, because they are truly a great asset to any group. Hopefully we can encourage any players out there who are considering playing a Coercer, to go ahead and give it a try. It might be a bit trying at times, but the reward ends up being well worth the effort when you decide to pick up a difficult class.

What is a Coercer?

Coercers, well, coerce! A strong Coercer has the ability to bend the weak-minded to their will. They use their many talents to subdue, mesmerize, and control enemies to do their bidding, and they do this VERY well. If you've ever been in a room full of mobs, all bashing on you at once, and thought "Gee, it'd be nice if these weren't all killing me right now." then you needed a Coercer!

What do I need to know to create a Coercer?

Congrats on deciding to play a Coercer! Coercers are of evil alignment, so you will need to start on the Outpost of the Overlord, Neriak, or Gorowyn with an evil or neutral race or betray a good race as an Illusionist.

I believe that every player should choose a race that they will be please with staring at for the long term, mostly because starting stats just won't matter for very long. If they do matter to however, the more intelligent races make slightly better mages at first. The more intelligent, neutral or evil races would be the Erudites, Gnomes, and Elves.

Once you've gotten your character made, you'll be plopped down right on the beginning area. I suggest using this zone to learn the basics of being a Coercer. Do the quests, and practice your skills. You can find a fabulous guide on the Outpost of the Overlord here, the Darklight Woods Guide, or the Timorous Deep Guide. These will help you find your way in your new homelands.

Which stats are important to a Coercer?

As mentioned above, the main stat on any mage will be intelligence. I heard a mage once say that you want intelligence capped first, then go after some strength so you can actually carry your own loot. I don't find strength to be all that useful, but after intelligence I'd suggest boosting your wisdom and agility, those will help with resists and avoidance.

What sort of gear should I equip my Coercer with?

The most important gear on a mage is going to be those stat boosting and resist gaining jewelry. Since you -really- don't want to be getting hit, stats are truly all that's going to be important when choosing a piece of armor. We've got great gear with nice resists in game now, so you'll want to get in on those, and a good portion can be found through quests and collections.

Starting out, there are armor quests everywhere. Do the series of quests on the starting island, find the quests around Freeport, and definitely make use of the level 20 armor quests. Guides to all of these can be found in our armor quest guide collection. You can also find some nifty items if you do the racial quests once you reach your racial village.

Where is the best place to hunt?

Everyone has their own favorite places to hunt, and I always encourage players to look around to find theirs! But it is always nice to at least be pointed in the right direction, so stop in and check out our tier leveling guides. These guides will let you know where you need to be at any given level range.

What is the quickest way to level my Coercer?

I was actually surprised that not all players realize that experience within a good group, killing heroic content, will get you up in levels far faster than going at it alone. I happen to be the shy type, so pick up groups really don't do it for me, so I depend heavily on my guild for good group play. If you happen to enjoy getting to know new people, then by all means, use those chat channels and LFG tags to find groups! If you aren't really comfortable with that sort of situation, like myself, then it's far nicer to find a good guild, make friends, and have a great group of people to group with on a regular basis.

If you are the soloing type, then quests are the way to go. Not only do you gain experience for the kills you make, but also for the quest updates which can really add up fast.

Good luck to you with your Coercer! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me.
