Destiny - Crucible Game Modes

by on Mar 22, 2015

The different crucible game types available in Destiny, and what it takes to win them.

Destiny's Crucible is the game's name for competitive pvp, where guardians pit themselves against one another in a variety of different game modes. Unlike other games, Destiny's competitive multiplayer is tied right into the "Story" rpg realm side and is actually a great source of experience for levelling. That being said, while it does provide XP for levelling your character, the crucible takes great care in making sure all players are on an equal playing field.

Levels, armor, and weapon stats/damage are all normalized so that each player goes into the game with the same stats as any other guardian there. You wont see any lvl 20 guardians knocking the daylights out of lower levels players (at least not due to their equipment anyways).

Other items you can expect to earn from the Crucible are reputation with various factions (depending on the game mode), crucible reputation (unlocks access to elite weapons and armor), and crucible marks (used to buy the elite weapons/ armor).

There are several different game modes offered in the crucible: Control, Clash, Rumble, Skirmish, and Salvage. Each game mode offers a completely different experience and several maps unique to them.

Control

Players: 12

The control game type is Destiny's version of point capture, with the objective of capturing and holding points to increase your score. The first team to reach 20,000 wins the game. There are 3 points on each map so controlling a majority is a must if you want to win.

Along with the points gained automatically from captured zones, you will also gain bonus points for kills depending on the amount of areas you have captured at the time. Having one area captured and killing a player will add 50 points to your teams score, hold 2 and the bonus is 100 points.

Tip: Don't get greedy when capturing points unless you really have the enemy team on the run. Firmly holding two points is better than spreading your team out to try and take the third, the result of which will often be you getting back capped.

Clash

Players: 12

Clash is your standard team deathmatch mode with two teams of six slugging it out to get to 10, 000 points first. It's important to remember that points are given for assists as well so try and stick with your team to maximize your score.

Tip: Keep moving and follow your team. Movement is life in the Crucible and sticking with your team will increase the likelihood that any enemy you run across gets taken down.

Rumble

Players: 6

If you've played Halo add "Pit" to the end and you get the idea. Six players go solo in a fight to see who comes out on top. It's frantic, and yes there will be a lot of Supers.

Tip: Stick to the edges of the map to prevent getting ambushed on all sides.

Salvage

Players: 6

Relics have been placed throughout the map and your team has to capture them and get them back to your ship. The capturing process involves deploying your probe on the relics to begin the transport to the ship. This process can be interrupted by the enemy team (which will give them points), so be sure and keep your ghost defended. First team to 10,000 wins.

Like the Skirmish game mode players can be revived by teammates.

Tip: Stick with your Ghost or interrupt the enemies. Be sure and stick with the objectives in this game mode. If you're not defending a ghost go out and interrupt the enemy's, both will give your team points.

Skirmish

Players: 6

A 3 v 3 small team battle. Same rules as the regular team battle except that you can revive your downed teammates. This and the small team sizes means working together is priority number one in this game mode.

Tip: Stick together. If you or a friendly goes down a fellow teammate can be revived. Double bonus, reviving a teammate gives bonus points!
