The Assault on Splinterskull series starts to become (slightly) more
difficult with quest 3. The adventurers are tasked by Chieftain
Ungurz to enter fortress Splinterskull and retrieve the plans that the
Splinter skull tribe have for responding to the previous incursions the
adventurers have made entering the fortress. Foes are more
dangerous here. There are now hobgoblin clerics, who cast (at
normal difficulty) doom, inflict minor wounds and (more dangerously)
searing light. More hobgoblin slayers and less guards are
found.
The heroes must venture further into the fortress this time, and face
wandering patrols, more traps, and have a larger area to clear.
It is wise to be prepared with
href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=221">crowd
control spells such as web and hypnotic pattern, and healing
spells. Also, spiders are more dangerous now, instead of brown
spiders, you meet brown spider princes, and the grey oozes found at the
entrance now are full sized, not lesser grey oozes. You also now
meet worgs often, instead of wolves.

you will find all the things you found upon the last two times entering
the outer fortress, aside from the fact that there are more
hobgoblin slayers and clerics, and less hobgoblin guards. When
you reach the first group of hobgoblins (where one rings a bell to
bring friends), go straight instead of further into the fortress.
Down the hall is Blood-drinker, a spawn of Whisperdoom.
Blood-drinker is basically a tough brown spider (cr 6 instead of 3).

After defeating her, travel
further into the fortress.

style="font-family: tahoma;">You no longer have to open the levers to
get past the portcullis, the
style="font-family: tahoma;">
style="font-family: tahoma;">hobgoblins are keeping the portcullis
up. Open the way to the shrine on the east, and in this
size="-1">
size="-1">
hallway you will
see a hobgoblin cleric with some infiltrators. In the eastern
prison area are slayers, clerics, and the first hobgoblin
tactician.

style="font-family: tahoma;">The tactician is a cr 5 hobgoblin
infiltrator. When he is killed, you should pick up the scroll he
drops on the floor. It may be obscured by his corpse, so you
might have to wait for the body to dissipate.

If you should go to the
scorpion room (and have someone with a 16 strength to open the door in
the pit), you will come upon a zombie, the animated corpse of the
prisoner you met in "
href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=409">The
Hobgoblin Captives". There is a chest in this room, as
before. However, the chests previously found in the prison areas
(aside from this one) are no longer there. The spike trap, it
should be noted, is still present.

Once finished with the
beginning area, the

style="font-family: tahoma;"> main hall is occupies by slayers,
clerics and infiltrators. The lightning trap and chest to

the east are still
present. After looting this, go down the western hallway and enter
size="-1">
size="-1">
deeper into the fortress.

At the end of the hallway you
will see that

the walls are now rough
hewn cavern walls, rather than mortar stone walls. Immediately
where this begins are several wolves and hobgoblins, so be
prepared. This group of hobgoblins are the first of 3 patrols
which wander the hallways of this part of the fortress, so be aware you
will be running into more. Usually you will spot them in the
distance before they spot you, allows you to prepare for them.

The hallways of this portion
of the fortress form a ring, with outlying hallways branching off this,
and a center tunnel in the center of the ring. The center tunnel
is noteworthy because it has a shrine near the beginning, then rises up
a hallway with two traps, a blade trap and a spinning blade trap.
At the end of the center
hallway is a large group of hobgoblin clerics and slayers,

with a chest and a second hobgoblin tactician. Again, you will
need to pick up the scroll on the ground (with a patrol map) to fulfill
this portion of your objectives. The end of the center hallway is
above the "ring" hallway, and overlooks the hallway, meaning that if
you pass within view of this group from the "ring" hallway, they will
pelt you with spells. You can approach carefully, however, and
place spells on them from a distance, if you wish.

The side hallways contain
href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=36">spiders,
mainly, but the northwest hallway contains (along with some slayers and
similar) the third hobgoblin tactician. After defeating the third
tactician (and picking up the combat orders) you have completed this
quest.
