The Eye - Attunement Guide

Welcome to the second part of our attunement guide to The Eye. In this part we look at the Cipher of Damnation quest chain, that is the main pre-requisite to The Eye's attunement quests.

The Cipher of Damnation Quest Chain

The Cipher of Damnation quest chain is completely done in the Shadowmoon Valley, and is one of the longest quest chains you will ever likely do with close to 30 steps. It is broken up into several pieces and once the initial chain is over, you gain access to three separate sub-chains that must all be completed before you can finish the initial main quest chain. Sound complicated? It is, a bit. But here we go...

The Cipher of Damnation Main Quest Chain

The chain starts with the quest "The Hand of Gul'dan" which can be gotten from Earthmender Sophurus in Wildhammer Stronghold if you are an Alliance player or from Earthmender Splinthoof in Shadowmoon Village if you play a Horde Character. No matter your faction, you now need to go and find Earthmender Torlok near the Deathforge near 42,45. Torlok will give you the quest "Enraged Spirits of Earth and Fire". You can find the earth and fire elementals just south east of the Deathforge in the green lava looking area around 45,47. Simply stand on some of the rock areas and place the totem and pull the elementals to you and the totem. When you kill them within range of the totem you will gain their spirits. When done, return to Torlok. Torlok will then as you to collect the "Enraged Spirits of Water", which can be found in several place. The best places seem to be any of the lakes around Coilskar Point. I found several at the lakes at 50,24 and 49,15. Do the same as the previous quest, planting the totem and pulling the elementals towards it and killing them. Return to Torlok when you are done. This time Torlok wants you to travel to the south east to the Netherwind Fields to collect "Enraged Spirits of Air". You will know you have found the area when you see all the blue crystals sticking out of the ground. I found a high concentration of Air elementals around 62,55. Once again use the totem to collect their spirits and then return to Torlok. Torlok thanks you and gives you the next quest, which is to find the hermit "Oronok Torn-Heart". You can find him directly north of the Coilskar Cistern as the quest states. The easiest way is to fly up on your mount to his farm at 52,23. Oronok will then give you a quest to dig up tubers called "I Was a Lot of Things..." that requires you to take a whistle to the area just north of him. There you must locate the tuber roots sticking out of the ground and then use the whistle to summon a nearby boar to dig it up. It is a tricky quest due to the unfriendly MOBs in the area, sometimes you have to find a boar being attacked and drag the MOB near a tuber, kill it, then use the whistle before the boar runs away. Once you have collected enough, return to Oronok. Oronok will now send you on another quest, this time for the eggs located to the north east of his farm. The quest is called "A Lesson Learned" and you can find a large concentration of the eggs around 57,18, however it will take some time as the MOBs have a large aggro radius. Also watch out for the elite MOB that wanders the area. Return to Oronok once you have gathered enough for the next part. Oronok will now tell you of "The Cipher of Damnation - Truth and History", which can be completed by listening to his story. Once you have heard all of his story Oronok will give you three follow up quest chains. They can be completed in any order you want, however Oronok will not resume this quest chain with you until all three sub chains are complete.

Grom'tor, Son of Oronok Quest Chain

This sub-chain starts with "Grom'tor, Son of Oronok" who can be found to the west at Coilskar point fighting the Naga's there. His exact location is 44,23. When you talk to Grom'tor he will give you the quest "The Cipher of Damnation - Grom'tor's Charge". To complete this quest you need to kill the nagas in the area around Coilskar Point and Coilskar Cistern to obtain keys. The keys will unlock boxes found around the area. In one of the boxes (apparently random) you will find the first fragment of the cipher. Take this back to Grom'tor. Be prepared for a lot of killing and searching though as it took me about 50 kills to get 20 keys to finally find the fragment. Rumor has it that there is a higher percentage chance of finding it at the cistern than the point, but that is only rumor as far as I can find. Return to Grom'tor to turn in the quest. He will then give you the final part in his chain which is "The Cipher of Damnation - The First Fragment Recovered". To complete this quest you can simply return to Oronok to the east, however I would wait until you have all three fragments and turn them in all at once.

Ar'tor, Son of Oronok Quest Chain

This sub-chain starts with "Ar'tor, Son of Oronok" who can be found by heading to Illidari Point in the south west portion of the map. Ar'tor can be found suspended in the air between 3 crystals at 29,50. Ar'tor's spirit will give you the "Demonic Crystal Prisons" quest which has you go north in the ruins to find and kill the demoness Gabrissa, who can be found at 28,47. Once turned in Ar'tor will have you talk to the spirit "Lohn'goron, Bow of the Torn-heart" who will appear right next to him. Speak to Lohn'goron who will offer a spiritual hunter guide to take you to find a fragment of the cipher. The quest "The Cipher of Damnation - Ar'tor's Charge" has you lead the hunter south through the ruins to find the spawning point of the demon Veneratus. He can be found almost directly south and appears when you near 30,57. Kill him and return to Ar'tor. When you speak to Ar'tor he will give you a box containing a fragment and the quest "The Cipher of Damnation - The Second Fragment Recovered". To complete this quest you can simply return to Oronok to the north, however as mentioned before, I would wait until you have all three fragments.

Borak, Son of Oronok Quest Chain

This sub-chain starts with "Borak, Son of Oronok" who can be found by following the southern road east from Shadowmoon Village, just before the first bridge at 47,57. He will give you the quest "Of Thistleheads and eggs..." which has you search the Arokkoa encampment nearby for rotten eggs. Once you get one, head to Shattrath city to give it to Tobias found at 64,69 by the quartermaster in the lower city. Tobias will give you "The Bundle of Bloodthistle" and ask you to take it back to Borak. Once you return to Borak he has you use the bloodthistle to "Catch a Thistlehead" which can be done easily just on the other side of the bridge. The quest is very easy if you just follow the directions, just be patient, it takes a few seconds for him to dismiss his guard and approach. Borak, now has you collect armor pieces from the various Blood Elves in the area for the quest "Shadowmoon Shuffle". Once you have enough return to Borak. Borak now gives you a Blood Elf disguise, but warns you that it is flimsy and that the birds can see through it. You use the disguise for the "What Illidan Wants, Illidan Gets..." quest. Listen carefully to him, as ANY damage, shape change, action, etc will break the costume. The easiest way to use it is to head to the stairs near Ruusk and then put the costume on and approach him. He can be found at 46,71. Once you are done talking to him, get a safe distance away before mounting up or you will be attacked.

Borak next gives you "Cipher of Damnation - Borak's Charge" in which he asks you to find a group and get the fragment from Ruul he Darkener who can be found near the Dragonmaw Fortress to the south east. This is a quest for at least 4 players as Ruul hits extremely hard. He can be found by heading to his landing point at 58,55.

There is a slightly easier way to defeat him though. Head to his landing spot and wait for him, while talking to Mordenai who spawns nearby at 59,58 (you talk to him to hold him in place). When Ruul lands, attack him and drag him to Mordenai and stand nearby. When Ruul cleaves, he will hit Mordenai and he will join the fight. You will still need a ton of dps and the ability to manage aggro, but the fight will be much easier.

Once you have defeated him, return to Borak.

When you speak to Borak he will give you a box containing a fragment and the quest "The Cipher of Damnation - The Third Fragment Recovered". To complete this quest you can simply return to Oronok to the north.

The Cipher of Damnation Main Quest Chain (Continuation)

Once you have all three of the sub-chains completed return to Oronok on his farm in the north. Turn them in and the last quest in his chain will be offered, which is "The Cipher of Damnation". To complete this quest you must find a group consisting of at least a tank, healer and DPS, however a full group of five is much easier to complete it with. Once you have your group head to the Altar of Damnation (found just south east of the deathforge) to summon and defeat Cyrukh the Firelord. During the fight Oronok and his sons will come to assist, however you still need almost a full group to defeat the firelord. Now that the Cipher of Damnation quest chain is complete you will receive a mail message from Khadgar requesting your presences in Shattrath. This leads to the Trial of the Naaru quest chains.
