ArenaNet's Mike O'Brien on Guild Wars 2 Microtransactions

ArenaNet President Mike O’Brien discusses the microtransaction philosophy and what’s different in Guild Wars 2.

ArenaNet President Mike O’Brien has posted a new blog that details what the team has planned for the microtransaction system of Guild Wars 2. Microtransactions will be purchased with the new gems currency, which can be purchased with cash or in-game gold.

We have a new player-driven market that allows players to trade gold for gems and gems for gold. If you want something, whether it’s an in-game item or a microtransaction, you ultimately have two ways to get it: you can play to earn gold or you can use money to buy gems. We think that’s important, because it lets more players participate on a level playing field, whether they use their free time or their disposable income to do it.

The system will help combat RMT companies and allow players to trade for what they need via the in-game Trading Post (Guild Wars 2’s version of the auction house). Additional details about Guild Wars 2’s Trading Post will be revealed in a future blog.
