Last week attacks were carried out on the US consulate in Benghazi Libya, resulting in the deaths of four Americans. Among them was a well-known figure in the EVE Online community, Sean 'Vile Rat' Smith. Since the news of his death in the attack, the EVE community has been in mourning at Smith’s passing. But if there is one thing that EVE community is known for, it’s their generosity during a time of loss and chaos. Despite corporate rivalries and in-game feuds, players have always been willing to set aside their differences to support those in need when called upon a number of different times.

Over the weekend, Goonswarm Federation partnered with Something Awful to arrange a fundraiser for Smith’s widow. Thus far the fundraising efforts have already garnered more than $48,000 in pledges as of the writing of this article. If you would like to support the drive with a donation, you can visit the fundraising page set up for Smith’s family here.

Players also paid tribute to Vile Rat over the weekend as well as a lengthy post by CCP that reflects on Smith's influence in EVE and the people that knew him.
