The iconic Commander Shepard will not be returning for the next installment of the Mass Effect series according to BioWare’s Fabrice Condominas.

For those players hoping that the fourth installment of the Mass Effect series would continue the saga of Commander Shepard, there’s some new news today regarding that and the timeline of the next game.

Speaking with VG247, BioWare Producer Fabrice Condominas confirmed that Commander Shepard will not be returning for the fourth installment of the saga, so there will be nothing more on that rather 'colorful' ending to Mass Effect 3. Condominas didn’t offer a lot of new details, but he did explain that the fourth game will not be a continuation of a Shepard-style storyline where players will be another soldier in the galaxy, but rather a new story that stands on its own.

“So first, we don’t want to make ‘Shepard 2?, or Mass Effect 4 with like, ‘oh there’s no more Shepard but you’re a soldier in the universe’. So this will be a very, very different context for sure, and nothing has been decided on the rest, Condominas told VG247.”

For now, it’s unknown if the next Mass Effect story will take place before, during or after the events of Mass Effect 3, or who will be the protagonist of the next game. Stay tuned and we’ll update you with more details as they become available.

Mass Effect 3's next content installment arrives on November 27th for those still looking to continue Shepard's story with the Omega DLC.
