You never want to hear the words "security breach" when it comes to your MMOG accounts, but Final Fantasy XI players recently learned that Square Enix had suffered a breach in security with some PlayOnline accounts. According to a recent release, there was an attack on the computer network, resulting in some account details being compromised. However, Square Enix has already taken steps to prevent further loss of information and they have changed the passwords for all PlayOnline IDs affected. Players who have had their passwords changed will be notified by email. Square Enix ensures players that if they have linked a Square Enix account to their PlayOnline IDs that their information is safe due to the type of details that were compromised. Furthermore, the release also states that no credit card or personal information was lost or compromised as a result of the attack. The full announcement is available on the PlayOnline website.

Kotaku also reports that the actions taken by Square Enix, while well-intended, have left some players locked out of their accounts and the events even left North American customer service offline for a while.
