Rumor: Steam Forums Hacked

by on Nov 07, 2011

<p>The Steam forums are down for maintenance today, but word has it they were recently hacked. Is your account safe?

2011 will be remembered if for nothing else the year that everyone sat up and took notice of cybercrime. Sony Online Entertainment’s epic security breach served as a catalyst that led to a year of security data breaches that compromised millions of accounts and user details. But the year is still young. According to a recent report from Kotaku, Steam may be the latest victim of the 2011 hacking spree.

Reports indicate that website may have been hacked early this morning with website redirects being sent to hacking website, Fknowned.com. While it’s not clear who perpetrated the act, Kotaku's report indicated that the Fknowned.com website was down earlier with the following message.

Fkn0wned Forum is currently unavailable In lights of someone crediting us for the recent breaches of steam forums, the board is offline. Fkn0wned is not responsible.

A post from Reddit contains an image of the forums before they were taken offline with an apparent message from Fknowned.com.

For now, the Steam forums remain offline with a maintenance message and no official word on the alleged events. Given that Valve offers free-to-play MMOGs support along with a number of other MMOGs and online games through their Steam platform; we figured it might be a good idea to urge our readers to change their passwords as a precaution. Given the year that we've been having you can never be too careful.

Update: Valve's Gabe Newell confirms Steam breach and offers details.
