Last month Cryptic Studios announced that it would be taking its superhero-based MMOG, Champions Online, free-to-play, joining the growing number of MMOGs to offer a free-to-play option. We even speculated that Star Trek Online (STO) could soon follow suit. STO Executive Producer Dan Stahl made it clear in an "Ask Cryptic" post that there were no plans to take STO free-to-play. But Cryptic CEO Jack Emmert recently told Eurogamer that STO going free-to-play could happen if Champions Online does well.

"We're not sold one way or the other with Star Trek yet. If people want Star Trek to go free-to-play then get in and play Champions and help make it a great success, because that would send a strong message."

Emmert also noted that he's not sure if the new move for Champions Online will be a success or not. Cryptic is certainly hoping to repeat the success that Turbine has had with their titles. Can they do it? Tell us what you think.
