The Secret World to Utilize Subscriptions and Microtransactions at Launch

Funcom reveals new details about The Secret World's pricing model during its quarterly financial presentation.

The Secret World will utilize both subscription and microtransactions as part of its business model according to Funcom Senior Community Manager Oliver 'Tarib' Kunz, who today posted details revealed during Funcom’s quarterly financial presentation.

The post explains that the game will launch with an in-game store that will mostly contain convenience items and cosmetics. Kunz emphasizes that no item purchased from the in-game store will give a player an unfair advantage against players that choose not to use the store.

Character power in The Secret World will be determined by how well you play the game, not how much money you are willing to put into it. Funcom already has considerable experience with in-game stores such as these and we have previously implemented these systems without damaging game balance in our other games, and as such we are confident the same will be true for The Secret World.

No additional details were revealed, but Kunz noted that the model is being finalized, so Funcom may not be finished just yet. Could we see a free-to-play version at launch? Given the recent success of Funcom's other title, Age of Conan: Unchained, it's not an unlikely possibility. Tell us your thoughts below.
