"Training spells" are Adept III upgrades to your current spells / combat abilities and are particular to your class progression. Besides being a straight upgrade (greater effect but greater power cost) these spells also typically add a bonus effect to the spell. You have your choice of one among four different spell upgrades every 10 levels between level 10 and 40. Since you're stuck with your choice for a long time, perhaps indefinitely, its worth researching these spells to decide which will last you a long time (perhaps to level 50 and beyond!)
