RIFT developer Trion Worlds has undergone a round of layoffs just in time to wreck the holidays for a few unlucky people.

Happy holidays from Trion Worlds. Here’s a pink slip. It was probably something close to that feeling today for a few employees as Trion revealed that it had undergone a round of layoffs just in time for the holidays. The confirmation handed down via Massively confirms the move with a vow to continue support for their games.

"As a response to market conditions, product timelines and the natural evolution of our company, we have made some organizational changes, which include a workforce reduction. This was a difficult decision and we wish the best for those affected by these changes. At Trion, we remain focused on delivering top quality online game experiences, and are committed to supporting Rift and launching our highly anticipated new titles Defiance, Warface, and End of Nations in 2013."

While Trion didn’t confirm the number of layoffs, a collection of Twitter post by Massively puts speculation as high as 30.

Trion recently brought End of Nations in-house to complete its development from Petroglyph. Petroglyph also suffered layoffs last week following the move.

As always, our best wishes go out to those affected by the layoffs. Hopefully they'll be able to get new employment quickly. It would certainly make for a better holiday gift than that lump of coal that they just had stuffed in their stocking.
