Gamers lose one of their own as a veteran EVE player and former CSM is killed in Benghazi, Libya.

This week the EVE Online community mourns the loss of one of its own as Sean Smith, better known to the EVE community as Vile Rat and a former member of the Council of Stellar Management, was one of four people killed this week by a mob attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya Tuesday night. The mob apparently picked up their pitchfork and torches on September 11th, of all dates, after an American-made movie short mocked Islam prophet Muhammad and reacted with a mob mentality that ended up costing several people their lives.

The Mittani has written a heartfelt story about Smith’s passing, their real world friendship, and how Smith's influence helped shape the universe of EVE.

"We knew that Vile Rat was in Benghazi; he told us. He commented on how they use guns to celebrate weddings and how there was a constant susurrus of weaponry in the background. He was in situ to provide IT services for the consulate, which meant he was on the net all the time, hanging out with us on Jabber as usual and talking about internet spaceship games."

Our thoughts and sympathies are with the Smith's family as well as the other families that lost loved ones in the senseless attack.
