First up: an assumption. Console owners want to play massively multiplayer games. This is far from unreasonable; there was a time when no console gamer would be seen dead playing a first-person shooter (except, of course, for GoldenEye). Now you can't move for high-budget, high-adrenaline FPS console hits. Looking at the huge success of World of Warcraft, it's clear the MMO genre has just as much growing room.

But, right now, console owners can't play massively multiplayer games. Neither Final Fantasy XI nor Everquest Online Adventures gained much traction on the PS2. In some measure, this was due to the fact that they required extra hardware, were poorly marketed or too expensive. Frankly, much of the problem came down to the mediocre gameplay, especially against PC peers. And let's not forget Microsoft's sole venture into the territory on the Xbox, True Fantasy Live Online, which disappeared without trace.
