Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a fast paced competitive card game (CCG) being released by Blizzard Entertainment and it sure jumps away from the status quo of RPG and RTS games like Warcraft, Diablo, and Starcraft. Announced at PAX East, this latest offering is sure to get cheers and jeers as fans stand around puzzled to the latest announcement.

While it’s not project titan, a new IP, or anything at all that was expected, it does have a chance to offer something new and exciting to the world of casual gaming. The game is simplistic, which is good (or bad if you’re someone who is into in-depth CCGs). You have health and mana, summon monsters and use spells, and try to deplete their health before they deplete yours.

What’s interesting about this game is that it was made with only a team of 15 people. The game itself is focused on 1v1 play and should have over 300+ cards at launch. I don’t think that the cards will emulate the WoW TCG, since the entire gameplay mechanics seem to be different.

Speaking of the WoW TCG, Blizzard has always been a huge fan of the trading card games. They’ve supported their own TCG game for eons. Although this specific game isn’t a spinoff of their TCG, I’m sure there will be some similarities between the two.

I’m not exactly sure myself what to think about the game. It’s definitely interesting and is, like I said, something far off the track of what Blizzard is known for. Is this a precursor to Blizzard moving into the casual / mobile game market with their current IPs? Is it just Blizzard being Blizzard and making something silly? What can we read into it?

As for the actual game, there isn’t a lot to discuss here either, what’s been shown is that it looks slick, will have that Blizzard polish, and will have a heavy Warcraft thematic influence. This includes the ability to challenge Thrall or even Uther to a duel.

One thing to note is that the game will be microtransaction based. You can earn through the game or purchase card packs with five cards in them. This is a pretty standard practice in online CCG games where you’re given a starter deck and will need to buy additional cards from the store. I’m sure there will be a card exchange too, so that you can take the risk out of it by spending more per card to build a specific deck.

That’s pretty much all of the known details on the new game. You can trust that Ten Ton Hammer will be here to deliver updates on the new game as they become available. In the meantime, you can visit Blizzard’s site to sign up for the beta or see more images from the actual game.
