The Lord of the Rings Online has a lot of engaging instances, but it doesn't take long to out-level that content and oftentimes players will simply miss out on some of the best content by blowing through to the max level. Volume 3: Book 2, however, will change a lot of this. It will be the first of several new chunks of content Turbine plans to release that will include scalable dungeons by using the game's Skirmish system to scale dungeons and earn new types of rewards.

In a new developer diary, Turbine's Joe “jwbarry” Barry details the planned changes to the Skirmish system for the coming update that will integrate the new scalable dungeons option. Joe details the new questing options that will be implemented with the new system, allowing players to get new quests for some of their older instances as they scale.

One of the constant challenges of game development, particularly within the MMO space, is the balance of quality and quantity when it comes to content. You need to make sure you have enough to do, but you also want to make sure it’s fun, challenging, and rewarding. Debates of how much more time to put into polishing a space, versus starting development on a new one, are a constant. When is good enough, good enough?

This is the first of a series of developer diaries planned about the new system. Next time Joe will talk about the reward structure and what players will be able to earn from these kinds of instances.
