Let me start out by saying that I love Warlords of Draenor. I am having more fun in this expansion than I have had in the last several. I adore just about everything about it and have had very few complaints. So, to say the least, I was looking forward to seeing what Patch 6.1 would bring us.

What new content would it bring? Would we be able to fly or would we remain grounded? Would Pepe finally be mine for always? This was the first patch to this expansion and it just had to be a doozy. Right?

We are now several weeks into this expansion and while many of my probing questions above have been answered, I can honestly say that this first patch was more than a little disappointing. A very far cry from what I and many others had anticipated. In fact, Patch 6.1 turned out to be nothing more than smoke, mirrors, and a metric ton of fluff.

It's So FLUFFY!

With videos, blog posts, and more, Blizzard made this patch out to be something really special. I think I speak for many gamers that with the hype leading up to the patch it was incredibly easy to overlook one simple thing; the fluff factor. This patch was and is filled with more fluff than an oversize teddy bear. In fact, in the grand scheme of things, Patch 6.1 introduced very little that couldn't be considered filler and fluff.

Think I am being overly harsh? Take a look at the new content that Patch 6.1 brought us:

  • Twitter Integration
  • S.E.L.F.I.E Camera
  • Daily Quests
  • Garrison Updates
  • Updated Blood Elf Models
  • New Heirloom Collection Tab

Now read over that list again and remind yourself that this is the list of new features that we got with the first major patch of this expansion. Now think about that for a second. This is considered to be major content that was supposed to fill out an entire patch. It reminds me of Minecraft patches, where they add a cow and create an entire patch around it.

Twitter and selfies are now huge major content worthy of an entire patch. Don't get me wrong, these are interesting and new features that many will use and enjoy, myself included. However, these new features are not enough to flesh out an entire patch.

A Look Back

Take for example patches of the past. Patch 1.6; Assault on Blackwing Lair, Patch 2.1.0; Black Temple, Patch 3.1; Secrets of Ulduar and more. All of these patches have one thing in common; major content. That is not to say that there wasn't some fluff in the midst. Fluff is inevitable, however, the fluff in past patches was typically put in alongside more substantial features. This helped make for a well rounded, long lasting, meaningful patch.

While there were a few patches in the past that were not memorable (Patch 2.2 ,anyone?), they tended to be the minority. Considering this was the first patch of this expansion, I think that many of us just expected a little bit more.

Moving Forward

Despite my complaining, I am still loving Warlords of Draenor. Even with a patch filled with mostly fluff, the game is still a lot of fun. With hat being said, I think that myself and many other players are hoping that the next patch has a little more substance and a little less fluff. Until then, you can find me happily tweeting the selfies of my Blood Elf's new face while completing my Garrison dailies.

Do you feel like Patch 6.1 was a let down? Was the content released purely fluff? What would you like to see in future patches? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below!
