The Scroll of Resurrection has been revamped in World of Warcraft and now you can bring your friends back to life with a level 80 character, Cataclysm for free, and a free realm/server transfer. This is a big change and many are pondering just what’s going on and how does it work? Well, the scroll of resurrection is something akin to the refer-a-friend program, except that you “cast” it on a fallen friend who has quit the game. When that friend returns, they get certain perks like free game time and you, yourself, receive a few goodies in exchange too.

The Spectral Gryphon is one of the choices in the new Scroll of Resurrection program.

The Scroll of Resurrection

The rules are simple, someone has had to have not logged into their account 90 days after their subscription ended, and this includes the free trial. Traditionally, the Scroll of Resurrection granted the inviting member a free month of game time if their friend re-subscribes. The invitee receives 10-days of free game time to decide if they want to play the game or not. There is a limit of up to three totals scrolls from all members being casted on a single account, so there are limits to exploiting it.

The new scroll follows the same formula, but these added perks are thrown in:

  • One character being boosted to level 80.
  • Free realm transfer. ($25.00 value)
  • Free faction change. ($30.00 value)
  • Seven days instead of ten days of game time. ($3.50 value)
  • Cataclysm Upgrade for free. ($40.00 value)

That’s a lot of stuff. We can place a monetary value on most of the items as well, which means that the returning player will cash in on $98.50 worth of freebies for coming back to the game, give or take a few dollars. That’s a lot of free stuff to just try WoW for a bit and see if you want to return.

Boosted characters will receive a free set of gear to help them in their new adventures and this offer only lasts for 90 days, after which it returns back to a similar version of the older program. Accounts inactive before March 4th, 2012 are the only ones eligible to receive this promotion.

As an added bonus, the casing member gains a free Spectral Gryphon or Wind Rider for their account, a free $25 value by average pet store prices.

The Scroll of Resurrection is currently on cooldown, but will be resurrected soon. Once it's available, you will be able to earn a free faction mount when you use a Scroll of Resurrection to bring a friend or former guildmate back to World of Warcraft, but this offer will only be available for a limited time. Any active World of Warcraft non-trial player can send a Scroll of Resurrection. To be eligible to receive a Scroll of Resurrection, your friend must have previously purchased at least one month of game time at any point in the past, and your friend's account must have been inactive since March 4, 2012 or earlier.

Once your friend accepts your scroll and pays for at least 30 days of game, you unlock your choice of the following rewards:

A Free Spectral Gryphon for an Alliance character
Or a Free Spectral Wind Rider for a Horde character

And, to enable you and your friend to play together in Cataclysm's newest content, any friend who accepts your Scroll will also receive the following epic benefits:

A single character immediately boosted all the way to level 80 -- DING!
A FREE upgrade to Cataclysm -- regardless of your friend's original box level
An optional FREE character move -- to your realm and faction so you can play together
7 FREE days of game time -- available immediately

A few other prerequisites apply -- such as a free upgrade to a Battle.net account for players who haven't played since 2009 or earlier -- so be sure to check out the FAQ below for full eligibility details.

We'll provide an update once the Scroll of Resurrection is ready to be cast on your friends. Keep an eye on the World of Warcraft official Community site for more information.

A lot of players are upset over this change. For one, many players are locked into the annual contract which restricts them from canceling their account for three months and pulling in these valuable perks before Mists of Pandaria launches. Those who are free to cancel still feel like this is way too much stuff to give a returning player, while current players get no extra value by continuing their membership.

Blizzard has tackled these concerns by placing a limit, only accounts inactive before this announcement may be eligible for the perks, throwing a wrench in the plans of many to cancel and cash in. So a lot of these feelings are unwarranted, although there is some legitimate concerns.

The other choice is a Spectral Wyvern.

I don’t know how exactly to view these perks myself. On one hand, I think it’s a great way to talk one of your friends into coming back into the game and joining arms with you in combat. On the other hand, we’re talking handing out paid services that if I wanted to take advantage of, I would need to throw out my hard earned money. Again, switching hands, I can take advantage of this deal personally on one of my alternate accounts and/or I can’t take advantage on my main even if I wanted to.

I don’t see much reason for players to feel cheated or get upset over this. I see this as a great bargaining tool to pull your friends back into the game. It’s a lot easier to get excited about joining a game whenever you can play with your friends within a few days (thanks to the free boost, gear, and dungeon / raid finder) for almost nothing then it is to talk them into buying one or more expansions, leveling up from level 1 on your server to level 85, and then have them go through the gearing up process.

So before you rush out and scream that Blizzard is unfair, think if there is someone you wished that would return to the game and then consider how good of a deal this is to turn up. You might just find that a few of your friends are a bit more willing to return and play with you and all of a sudden this deal becomes a good thing.

How do you feel about this? Can’t wait to send out your scrolls or do you think this that this deal is a bit too good to be true? Leave your interesting and creative comments below.
