The beta for the World
of Warcraft
remote auction house has ended and href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/85155">the RAH is now
live. For those of you looking at this column with a
quizzical stare, the Remote Auction House is the newest service from
Blizzard Entertainment. For $2.99 a month you can now access the WoW
auction house from any web browser or your mobile device and bid on,
create, and cash in on any auctions. href="http://www.wowarmory.com/wow-remote.xml">Seriously.

Blizzard wasn't the first to introduce the idea, mind you. href="http://eq2.zam.com/db/broker.html"> style="font-style: italic;">EverQuest 2 opened
a similar service in 2008. The main differences being that
EQ2's version is operated by a third party who was granted access to
SOE's database, and no actual purchasing can be made. But, the service
is free, as is Blizzard's if you choose to only browse the auction
house and not make any actual transactions.

The idea is a cool one, particularly for those budding entrepreneurs of
the game who know how to spot those items which will make a profit. Now
you're no longer limited to the confines of sitting in front
of your PC; you can turn a buck from anywhere in the world (with decent
3G or 1x services). I can just see it now. Businessmen and women riding
the tram while selling herb mats. Students sneakily tapping away at
their iPhones hidden beneath their desks to buy all the copper ingots
on the market. Yes, the "virtual" economy is no longer restricted to
something we do at home during leisure hours. It's a part of our every
day lives.

Perhaps the most intriguing element to this phenomenon is that it's
essentially a stock exchange for dummies. Applied to real stocks, a
$2.99/mo broker fee is a steal. When applied to a virtual market... not
so much. Unless perhaps that gold is being sold on the secondary
market.

Regardless of the intent, the apps are another way to stay in the game
while not in game. But they're also incredibly handy style="font-style: italic;">while in the game.
It's not always convenient to have to run to an auction house, or a
broker, and sometimes you just want to look up the price of something.
Now you can do that, without having to return to town. To me that's the
real value in these services.

Either that, or we can use it as training software before we make the
plunge into the real stock exchange.

Recap

The
summer doldrums have arrived for many in the world of
subscription-based MMOGs and you may have already noticed a drop in the
population of your favorite virtual world. With nicer weather,
graduation ceremonies, summer vacations and looming expansions, it may
be harder to find a group or a raid to help fend off the boredom. A
nice free-to-play title would be just what the doctor ordered to beat
the summer time blues, but which one is right for you? Fear not, Ten
Ton Hammers, Jason “Medawky” Bolton has the answer. He recaps some of
the games we have recently reviewed in this week’s Microcosms.

World of Warcraft into the mix. Will this combination of forces have
