In a recent post to the Diablo III forums, Game Director Jay Wilson sent a message to fans about the state of the game and that a release date would be coming in the “near future”, which seemed to be carefully worded to avoid saying coming soon, something that Blizzard has become notorious for.
We think you're going to love Diablo III when it's released, and speaking of release plans, you can seriously expect a launch-date announcement from us in the near future. See, I didn’t say “soon,” so I’m not taunting you. ;) You’ll know as soon as I know for sure the exact date.
Wilson also touched on the current state of the beta and in-house build for the game.
As those of you in the beta have seen, the game is in good shape. Actually, I should say that the beta version of the game is in good shape. The latest full build we've been testing here in the office is in great shape.
While we still have no solid release date, the game’s development seems to be progressing well judging by Wilson’s statements, so perhaps a solid date will be “coming soon.”

As good as Diablo III may well be, isn't announcing a release date for the release date a little bit of overkill?
