A templar is a warrior knight, much
like a paladin, but perhaps with more martial of a nature.  As
such, templars are more formidable than regular paladin's in melee
combat, being able to deal damage fairly well, and being more able
defensively (in a physical sense, using tower shields and
similar).  By the same token, Templar's are still knights of a
religious order, and do not give up much.. some casting ability, but
keeping the high saves and durability that a paladin has.



In combat, templars should use a tower shield and intimidate to gain
opponents attention.  With lay of hands, a templar can use
emergency healing, but they will require some support from another
healer (who is not involved in blocking constantly).



Other than combats where the templar is blocking, they can use smite
evil to do extra damage, and are fairly able in combat.  An
alternative build is to place the melee weapon feats they have into
blunt weapons, making their shields more (and oddly) effective when
shield bashing.
