In this section you will find practical advice from a player, or players, who actually play a Coercer! Thank you to Tallika for his guidance and wisdom on how he plays his class.

And I am always looking for more words of wisdom, so if you play a Coercer and have tips, tricks, or advice to share please post them on the Ten Ton Hammer class forum, or if you are feeling shy, you can e-mail it directly to me!

Soloing

Of the many classes in EQ2, the Coercer faces the most challenges while
soloing. While others go on about damage per second or power
consumption we have to worry about something unique, our pet whom we
suborned into our service could at any moment turn around and kick our
lightly padded butts. If the ever present demon, Murphy, has anything to
say about it, it usually happens at the worst possible time.

/Revive.

“Stuff happens” and happens quite frequently. Accept it, adapt and
overcome!

BUT DO NOT FEAR!!! Coercers are very well equipped to handle mobs
while soloing. There are four core spells that you will need:

Magic Debuff – Adept3 or better, allows you and your pet to nuke target
harder.

Root – Adept3 or better, keeps the mob locked down in one place.

Mesmerize - Adept3 or better, stops the mob from doing any actions.

Charm – Master level is critical.

Search your hunting zone for a nice caster/priest pet. If you're a
race other than Erudite, they receive Aurasight as a racial trait, then
experience will be your guide on which mobs are priests or casters. A
pure caster is best for damage but a priest pet can heal itself if its
health gets down into the yellow. The critical nature of the master
level charm spell is so your pet will be casting with master level
spells and resistance modifications.

Once you have your pet nicely charmed use the command /pet ranged, this
will force your pet to only use ranged abilities on the target. Also
toggle off your pet's Protect Self and Protect You states in the
control window.

1.Mez Mob.
2.Root
3.Debuff
4.DD Reactive Spell, if your 40+
5.Pet attack
6.Refresh root and mez as needed.

If you feel you or your pet are able to do some tanking, grab a melee
pet. They are usually identifiable by the spell buffs you can see when
targeted. Buff your pet with hate gain spell.

1.Pet attack
2.Stifle, daze and stun mob.
3.Melee DD reactive
4.root if your getting low on health
5.Blink to help your pet regain aggro

Notes: Keep a close eye on your pet as it can break at any time. Your
screen will flash with yellow sonic vision to tell you its happened.
Be ready to mez and root your target while you regain control of your
pet.

Groups

As you know the Coercer has many many control spells, so it is in a
group that you will truly be able to dazzle other players when the
situation degenerates into total chaos. You will also notice that
Coercers also come up rather short on the concentration slots. We
have way more spells that require concentration than we are given, so
personal play decisions have to be made, get a pet for 3 concentration
or use those points on your group members.

Personally, I do without the pet in group situations so I can utilize my
buffs to their full potential. Both group buffs, mana regen, hate and
haste on main tanker, and haste on any other melee players or pets in
the group.

Then with all the buffing done I can put my full focus into debuffing,
throwing damage reactives, power siphoning to the group, stunning,
stifling and all the other good spells we have to make the mob and his
friends gimp and easier to take down. Hopefully your groups healer
will notice the difference in damage being taken by they tank and the
group. Unless your taking aggro and having to be scraped up off the
floor frequently. Use your de-aggro spells frequently, the lower on
the hate list you can place yourself the better, as your spells can
cause large amounts of hate from the mob.

Spell Upgrades

While it would be nice if all our spells were Master quality and we had
the unlimited plat to spend buying them all, alas, that is not the
case.

For the solo Coercer i'd recommend upgrading: Charm -> Root -> Mez ->
DD reactives -> Hate Buff -> all others

For the grouping Coercer i'd recommend upgrading: Mez -> Group Buffs ->
(Daze,Stun,Stifle)+ Encounter versions -> DD Reactives -> Debuffs ->
all others.

Achievements

There are a lot of achievement abilities to choose from, but there are a
few that are considered to be of greater immediate value to a Coercer.

From the Enchanter Tree the first three from the Wisdom are extremely
helpful.

From the Coercer Tree getting all 5 points of the Enhance: Beguile is
super helpful.
